Future Transit: California High-Speed Rail
California High-Speed Rail is still under construction, so it is not currently a direct Los Angeles–San Francisco travel option. In 2026, active construction spans 119 miles in the Central Valley between the Merced and Bakersfield areas, while planning and environmental work continues on the larger San Francisco–Anaheim system.
| Project area | 2026 status |
|---|---|
| Central Valley | 119 miles under construction |
| Merced extension | Design and pre-construction activities advancing |
| Full SF–Anaheim Phase 1 | 463 of 494 miles environmentally cleared |
The Authority’s 2026 Business Plan targets the Merced–Bakersfield early operating segment for completion around 2032–2033. That does not mean a direct Los Angeles–San Francisco service will begin then; the larger statewide system would still be required for that trip.
