US Working Hours Calculator: Monthly and Annual Hours
A standard 40-hour week is 2,080 hours a year, but your real total depends on the calendar. Set your workdays, remove observed federal holidays and your own closures, and see the exact hours for each month. This is a calendar planner. For completed clock-in and clock-out shifts, use a time card calculator.
The federal holiday list is a planning preset, not a rule for private employers. Uncheck any date your workplace does not observe, and add your own closures below.
Quick answer
A 40-hour week over 52 weeks is 2,080 hours a year, or 173.33 hours a month on average. 2026 has 261 weekdays, which is 2,088 hours at 8 hours a day. All 11 federal holidays fall on weekdays in 2026, so a Monday to Friday worker who takes them all has 250 workdays and 2,000 hours before PTO. Use the calculator for your own schedule and year.

How many working hours are in a month or year?
No single number fits every schedule. A 40-hour week over 52 weeks gives 2,080 hours a year, or 173.33 a month. That is a handy benchmark, but a real calendar year has 260, 261 or 262 Monday to Friday dates, and holidays and closures take more away.
For 2026, 261 weekdays at 8 hours is 2,088 hours. The 11 observed federal holidays all land on weekdays, including Friday, July 3 for Independence Day, so a Monday to Friday worker who observes every one has 250 days and 2,000 hours. Check the official OPM holiday schedule to confirm dates.
2026 US working hours by month
This reference is for a Monday to Friday schedule at 8 hours a day. It counts real weekdays, then removes the 11 observed federal holiday dates. It does not subtract PTO or employer closures. Dates follow the OPM 2026 holiday schedule.
| Month | Weekdays | Federal dates on weekdays | Hours before holidays | Hours after holidays |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| January | 22 | 2 | 176 | 160 |
| February | 20 | 1 | 160 | 152 |
| March | 22 | 0 | 176 | 176 |
| April | 22 | 0 | 176 | 176 |
| May | 21 | 1 | 168 | 160 |
| June | 22 | 1 | 176 | 168 |
| July | 23 | 1 | 184 | 176 |
| August | 21 | 0 | 168 | 168 |
| September | 22 | 1 | 176 | 168 |
| October | 22 | 1 | 176 | 168 |
| November | 21 | 2 | 168 | 152 |
| December | 23 | 1 | 184 | 176 |
| Total 2026 | 261 | 11 | 2,088 | 2,000 |
July 4, 2026 is a Saturday, so most federal employees observe Friday, July 3. The 2,080 figure is the 52-week benchmark. 2,088 is the actual 2026 weekday count at 8 hours.
Typical work hours per month
At 8 net hours a day on a Monday to Friday schedule, a month’s total depends on its weekdays, before holidays and time off. With an unpaid 30 minute break on an 8 hour shift, use 7.5 net hours instead.
| Weekdays in month | Net hours per day | Hours before holidays |
|---|---|---|
| 20 | 8 | 160 |
| 21 | 8 | 168 |
| 22 | 8 | 176 |
| 23 | 8 | 184 |
The 173.33 hour figure is a yearly average (2,080 divided by 12), not the exact total for every month.
How the US working hours calculator works
- Pick a year. It counts the real dates in that year, so weekday patterns are exact.
- Set your schedule. Choose a preset or tick your own workdays, then set the shift length and any unpaid break.
- Review holidays. Observed federal dates are preselected. Uncheck any your employer does not observe.
- Add your own days off. Dated closures are removed from the right month. Undated PTO reduces the annual total only.
Work hours equal workdays left after holidays and closures, times (shift length minus unpaid break). Hours after PTO equal that total minus PTO days times net hours per day, never below zero. A date that is both a holiday and a closure is only removed once.
The monthly table counts a date only if it falls on one of your chosen workdays and is not a selected holiday or closure. The break is then taken off each remaining day. PTO can never remove more days than remain after closures.
Why federal holidays are only a starting point for a US working hours calculator
Federal law sets the public holidays for federal employees. When one falls on a Saturday it is generally observed the Friday before, and when it falls on a Sunday, the Monday after. Private employers choose their own holidays. The U.S. Department of Labor says the Fair Labor Standards Act does not require pay for time not worked on holidays, so holiday benefits are a matter of agreement. See the Department of Labor holiday guidance.
One-off closures are not in the preset. The 2025 executive order that closed federal offices on December 24 and 26 was not a permanent holiday, and Inauguration Day applies only to certain Washington area employees. Add dates like these yourself in the closures box if they apply to you.
The preset also leaves out state holidays and employer-only holidays, because they differ by workplace. The calculator is a planning estimate, not a payroll or legal determination.
