Apple HomeView vs HomePod mini 2: Price, Specs and What to Buy
Apple’s 2026 smart-home refresh introduces three products that look related but solve different problems: the $299 Apple HomeView smart display, the $149 HomePod mini 2 speaker, and the $299 fourth-generation Apple TV 4K. HomePod mini 2 went on sale October 30. HomeView and the new Apple TV 4K are scheduled to arrive November 13. The key buying question is not which has the biggest chip. It is whether you need a screen for the home, a compact speaker, or a TV streaming box.
Quick answer: Which Apple smart-home device should you buy?
Choose HomeView if you want a shared 7-inch touchscreen for Home controls, FaceTime, photos, personal household views and voice control—and already use a compatible iPhone or iPad. Choose HomePod mini 2 if you mainly want room-filling audio and a compact Apple Home hub for $149. Choose Apple TV 4K if you want streaming apps on your television, hands-free Siri and the option to build Apple’s four-speaker HomePod surround setup.

Apple HomeView: what the $299 smart display actually offers
Advertisements
HomeView is a home-facing touchscreen, not a small iPad. It combines a 7-inch square Liquid Retina display with an A18 chip, a 12MP Center Stage camera, a four-microphone far-field Siri design, speakers and Apple’s Home software. Apple lists a 1088-by-1088 resolution, 220 pixels per inch and brightness from 0.3 to 500 nits. It is designed for shared household use, with up to six people enrolled for personalized experiences.
The App Store limitation is real—but the original draft overstated it
HomeView has no on-device App Store, so you cannot browse and install iPhone-style apps directly on the display. However, that does not mean it is restricted to Apple apps only. Apple lists supported third-party audio and video apps, and selected apps can appear through a compatible connected iPhone or iPad. The device also has built-in apps such as Home, Calendar, FaceTime, Find My, Messages, Music, Podcasts, Reminders, Safari, Timers, Weather and World Clock.
For setup, Apple’s technical specifications require an iPhone running iOS 27.2 or later or an iPad running iPadOS 27.2 or later, plus Wi-Fi. Apple lists Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 6 and Thread for HomeView; it does not list an Ethernet port, and MacRumors notes that the actual device is Wi-Fi-only. This is an important purchase check if you are buying HomeView for someone who does not use a compatible Apple device.
Siri AI language and country availability: Apple says HomeView’s Siri AI is available in English in the United States, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and the United Kingdom. Canadian French support is planned for a later software update. Apple says HomeView is not currently available for sale in the European Union because Siri AI is not available in iOS there.

Is the six-month-old HomeView software report a problem?
MacRumors reported on November 1 that AppleDB listed an initial HomeView software build as version 26.5, with the newer 27.2 version available for setup. The report says buyers will be prompted to update during setup. This is based on firmware database records—not a published Apple statement that the product ships with a defect or permanently outdated software. Since HomeView is not scheduled to reach customers until November 13, the practical question is how long the initial update takes and whether the retail units receive a later build before delivery.
HomePod mini 2: the $149 speaker with a delayed Siri AI feature
HomePod mini 2 is the audio-first option. Apple announced it with the S10 chip, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 6, new colours and Sound Glow, a visual effect that pulses with music. It also supports multiroom audio and can work as part of the new four-speaker HomePod surround configuration when paired with the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K.
- US price: $149. Apple says availability began October 30, 2026.
- Chip and wireless: S10, Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 6.
- Microphones: MacRumors reports three microphones, compared with four on the original HomePod mini. That count alone does not prove worse Siri pickup; Apple has not published a comparative microphone-performance test.
- Siri AI: Announced, but Apple’s launch announcement says the new Siri AI features are coming in a future software update. Personal-context requests will also require an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad.
- Mac audio: MacRumors reports default audio output support for compatible Macs with Wi-Fi 6E and later. Treat this as a compatibility feature to test with your exact Mac and software version rather than a reason to buy without checking.
The key value decision is straightforward: at $149, HomePod mini 2 costs half as much as HomeView. But it has no display or camera. It is a compact speaker and smart-home hub, not a substitute for a shared family touchscreen. The three-microphone figure is a hardware-count difference, not proof that voice recognition is worse; real-world pickup should be judged by comparative testing.
Apple TV 4K (4th generation): the TV and surround-sound option
The new Apple TV 4K is a streaming box for a television. It is not a direct HomeView alternative. The fourth-generation model uses an A19 chip and 128GB storage, with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread, Gigabit Ethernet and HDMI 2.1. Apple also lists three far-field microphones for hands-free Siri and a Siri Remote with Find My Precision Finding.
Its most notable home-theater change is support for a four-speaker surround setup using four HomePod mini 2 or HomePod (2nd generation) speakers. Apple says the speakers work in front and rear pairs, with room-aware audio calibration. The device is priced at $299 in the United States and is scheduled to become available November 13, 2026.

Our buying recommendation
Advertisements
For most Apple households, start with the job you need done—not the newest feature list. HomePod mini 2 is the least expensive way into this refreshed lineup and makes sense when sound and voice control matter most. HomeView is a more specialized $299 purchase: it is attractive as a shared screen in a kitchen or common area, but its value depends on using Apple’s ecosystem and accepting the no-App-Store model. Apple TV 4K is the right buy if your priority is the television, not a desk or wall display.
Before ordering HomeView, confirm that your iPhone or iPad meets Apple’s software requirement and price the wall-mount accessories separately. Before buying HomePod mini 2 specifically for Siri AI, remember that Apple’s announcement puts those new capabilities in a future software update rather than promising full availability on day one.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Apple HomeView cost and when does it launch?
Apple lists HomeView at $299 in the United States, with availability scheduled for November 13, 2026. Both tabletop and wall-mounted variants are listed at the same starting price. Wall-mount accessories are extra.
Does Apple HomeView have an App Store?
No. HomeView has no on-device App Store. It supports selected apps from a compatible connected iPhone or iPad, including supported third-party audio and video apps. This is different from being limited to Apple apps only.
Does HomePod mini 2 have Siri AI?
Apple announced Siri AI support for HomePod mini 2, but says the new Siri AI features are coming in a future software update. Do not assume those new features are available immediately at launch.
Did Apple reduce the HomePod mini microphone count?
MacRumors reports three microphones on HomePod mini 2 compared with four on the original. That is a hardware-count difference, but it does not by itself prove poorer Siri recognition or sound pickup.
Is the HomeView wall-mounted model more expensive than the tabletop version?
Both are listed at $299 in the United States. The wall-mounted product requires a compatible mount, USB-C cable and at least 20W power adapter sold separately, so the installed cost can be higher.
Does HomeView really ship with six-month-old software?
MacRumors reported that AppleDB lists an initial HomeView build as version 26.5 and that setup may prompt an update to 27.2. This is a firmware-database report, not an Apple statement that the device is defective or that every retail unit will ship on that build.
Can four HomePod mini 2 speakers work as Apple TV 4K surround sound?
Yes. Apple says the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K supports a four-speaker surround setup using four HomePod mini 2 or HomePod (2nd generation) speakers in matching front and rear pairs.
Is Apple HomeView a replacement for an iPad?
Not really. HomeView is designed as a shared home display with a fixed set of built-in apps and supported apps presented from a connected iPhone or iPad. It does not offer the same general-purpose app installation and tablet flexibility as an iPad.
