Discord Messages on Google: How to Opt Out and Protect Your Privacy
Discord is making some conversations from its most public communities easier to find on the open web. From November 16, 2026, Discoverable Servers will have public Server Web Pages that may show AI-generated summaries of recent public-channel discussions. From mid-December 2026, eligible messages from selected public channels may also appear on those pages and in web search, including Google. This does not mean every Discord message is becoming public: the change is limited to Discoverable Servers, participating public channels, and messages that meet both the server and member settings. Quick answer: Can people see your Discord messages on Google?
Some public Discord messages may become searchable from mid-December 2026. They must come from a public channel in a Discoverable Server, the server administrator must allow Channel Messages for that channel, and the member’s own setting must allow the message to appear. Discord says usernames and avatars will not be shown alongside these messages. Private servers, DMs, group DMs, role-restricted channels, private threads and private forums are excluded. Search engines decide what they index, so publication on a Discord page does not guarantee every message will appear in Google results.

What Discord Is Changing: Three Different Web Features
It is important not to treat all three features as one setting. A Server Web Page, an AI Channel Summary and a verbatim Channel Message are different things, and they do not have the same privacy controls.
| Feature | What appears | When | Who controls it? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Server Web Page | A public page describing a Discoverable Server. It can be viewed by people without a Discord account and may appear in search engines. | Every Discoverable Server will have one from November 16, 2026. A default page is created if the server has not published its own. | Server owner/admin manages the page. Turning off Discoverability removes the page but changes the server back to a Community Server. |
| Channel Summaries | AI-generated summaries of active discussions in selected public channels. They are summaries, not a transcript of each member’s posts. | From November 16, 2026 onward. | Server admins choose the channels, can curate summaries or disable the feature. Member message opt-out does not control summaries. |
| Channel Messages | Eligible text messages and answers from selected public channels, in the member’s own words. Usernames and avatars are not shown alongside them. | Gradual rollout from mid-December 2026; Discord says it may take a few weeks for messages to appear. | Both server admins and individual members control eligibility. The member setting applies across the member’s account. |
Discord says the changes apply only to Discoverable Servers. These are the most public server type: the server must have at least 1,000 members, be at least eight weeks old, meet activity and safety requirements, and be listed in Server Discovery. Having 1,000 members alone does not automatically make a server Discoverable; its Discovery status matters.
Discord reported more than 63,000 Discoverable Servers in its October 27 announcement. It says public channels are included by default in the server controls, but admins can select or deselect individual channels independently for summaries and messages.
Which Countries Have Discord Messages Turned On by Default?
Advertisements
Discord’s member setting is on by default in most regions. It is off by default when the account is in the EU/EEA, United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, Australia or South Korea. Discord also says accounts in its teen age group cannot enable Channel Messages. These defaults apply to the member’s individual messages; they do not decide whether a server’s AI Channel Summaries are shown.
| Account region / age group | Individual Channel Messages default | Can the member enable it? | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States and most other regions | ON | Yes, adult age group | Turn it OFF in Data & Privacy to stop future eligible messages appearing. |
| EU/EEA, UK, Canada, Brazil, Australia, South Korea | OFF | Yes, adult age group | Leave it OFF; check the setting rather than relying only on the default. |
| Discord teen age group | OFF / excluded | No | Discord says teen-age-group messages won’t appear through Channel Messages and the setting cannot be enabled. |
Do not confuse account region with the country where you are travelling. Discord describes the rule in terms of the region associated with the account. The safest check is to open Data & Privacy and inspect the actual setting shown on your account.
How to Stop Your Discord Messages from Appearing on Google
Members can change this setting on Discord desktop or in a web browser. The preference applies to the whole Discord account, including messages sent from the mobile app.
- Open Discord on desktop or in a browser. Sign in to the account whose messages you want to protect.
- Open User Settings. Select the gear icon near your username/profile area.
- Choose Data & Privacy. Look for the setting named “Show my message content from Discoverable channels on web pages.”
- Switch the setting OFF. This stops new eligible messages you send from being displayed on the web through Channel Messages.
- Review older eligible posts separately. The toggle does not bulk-delete messages sent while it was on. Delete individual messages in Discord if you no longer want them displayed on Discord’s Server Web Pages.
How Discord Server Admins Can Turn Off Web Messages and AI Summaries
Server administrators have their own controls. They are separate from each member’s personal setting and are currently available on desktop or in a browser. Only the server owner or someone with Administrator permission can change Web Presence. Discord says both feature toggles and public-channel selections are on by default, but admins can independently change the Channel Summaries and Channel Messages settings.
- Open the Discoverable Server in Discord desktop or browser.
- Open Server Settings → Community → Web Presence.
- Find “Discoverable Content on Web Pages.” Channel Summaries and Channel Messages have separate switches.
- Choose the channels for each feature. You can deselect individual public channels or turn either feature off for the entire server. The selections for summaries and messages are independent.
- Select Save Changes. Check the server’s Web Presence page again to confirm both settings and channel lists.
When creating a public text channel in a Discoverable Server, Discord also provides channel-level choices such as All Content, Summaries Only, Messages Only or Off. This lets admins expose a useful information channel without automatically including every public channel.
Does Turning the Setting Off Remove Old Discord Messages from Google?
No. Turning off your personal setting is not a bulk “remove my history” action. Discord says a message’s eligibility depends on the Channel Messages setting at the time it was sent. Messages sent while the setting was on may remain visible even after you switch it off. Discord also confirms that messages sent before the mid-December 2026 rollout are excluded from this new Channel Messages feature.
How to remove an individual message that has already appeared
- Find the original message in Discord.
- Delete that specific message from the channel.
- Allow Discord’s Server Web Page to update. Discord says the deleted message is removed from its own web page.
- If a search result remains, remember that Google and other search engines control their own caches and update schedules. A separate search-engine removal request may be needed.
There is an equivalent issue for server admins: turning off Channel Summaries or Channel Messages stops new content from being generated or shown going forward, but already-published content may remain until it is individually removed. Removing a channel from the Web Presence selection stops it contributing new content; it is not necessarily an instant purge of everything previously published.
What Is Not Included in Discord’s Web Search Changes?
Advertisements
- Private servers and ordinary friend servers: these are not Discoverable Servers.
- Direct messages and group DMs: Discord says these remain excluded.
- Role-restricted/private channels: they are not eligible, even inside a Discoverable Server.
- Private threads and private forums: excluded even when their parent channel is public.
- Messages sent before mid-December 2026: excluded from the new Channel Messages feature.
- Member usernames and avatars: Discord says these are not displayed alongside Channel Messages or Channel Summaries.
Discord’s current help article says Channel Messages on the web will show text only. A small number of partner communities have had images and videos in an earlier pilot, but Discord says that capability is not yet broadly available.
One privacy point still matters: hiding a username and avatar does not guarantee that message text cannot identify you. Avoid posting phone numbers, email addresses, home/work details, account identifiers or other personal information in a public channel if you do not want it exposed outside Discord.
Is Discord Selling Messages to AI Companies?
Discord says it is not selling user messages to AI companies. The announced change is about making selected public Discoverable Server content available on Server Web Pages and in web search. Separately, Channel Summaries are generated by AI from recent discussions in selected public channels. Discord warns that summaries may not always be accurate, and server administrators can curate or disable them. This distinction matters: the web-discoverability announcement should not be treated as proof of a separate AI-training policy.
Your member Channel Messages toggle controls whether your individual messages can appear as Channel Messages. It does not switch off server-level Channel Summaries. Ask the server owner or administrator to change the Channel Summaries selection if you do not want that channel summarized.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can people find my Discord messages on Google?
From mid-December 2026, eligible text messages in participating public channels of Discoverable Servers may appear on Discord Server Web Pages and in web search, including Google. Both the server’s Channel Messages setting and your own member setting must allow the message. Usernames and avatars are not displayed alongside the message. Discord’s member guide.
How do I stop my Discord messages from appearing on Google?
On desktop or in a browser, open User Settings → Data & Privacy and turn off “Show my message content from Discoverable channels on web pages.” It applies to your account, including messages sent from mobile. It stops future eligible messages; it does not remove earlier messages.
Which countries have Discord Channel Messages turned off by default?
Discord lists the EU/EEA, United Kingdom, Canada, Brazil, Australia and South Korea as default-off regions. In most other regions the member setting is on by default. Discord’s teen age group is excluded and cannot enable the setting. Official regional rules.
Are private Discord servers and DMs included?
No. Discord says the changes apply to public channels in Discoverable Servers. Private servers, DMs and group DMs are excluded. Role-restricted channels, private threads and private forums are also excluded.
Will Discord messages I sent before December 2026 appear on Google?
Discord says messages sent before the mid-December 2026 Channel Messages rollout will not be shown through this feature, regardless of your setting. The rollout is gradual, so new eligible messages may not appear immediately.
Does turning off the privacy setting delete messages I already sent?
No. Messages sent while the setting was on can remain. Delete each affected message inside Discord to remove it from Discord’s own web pages. Search engines may retain cached or indexed copies for longer.
Can server admins turn off Channel Summaries and Channel Messages separately?
Yes. On desktop or browser, open Server Settings → Community → Web Presence. The features have separate switches and separate channel selections. Discord’s admin guide.
Does opting out of Channel Messages also stop AI Channel Summaries?
No. The member setting controls your individual Channel Messages. AI Channel Summaries are controlled separately by server admins and may still appear unless the admin disables summaries or excludes the channel.
If a server admin disables web visibility, does existing content disappear immediately?
No. Disabling either feature stops new content from being published, but previously published content may remain until individually removed. Search engines also control their own caches and removal timelines.
