iPad mini 8 A20 Pro: 128GB vs 512GB Chip Differences

The 2026 iPad mini looks similar across its three storage options, but the processor configuration is not identical. Apple’s specifications show a five-core A20 Pro CPU in the 128GB and 256GB models, while the 512GB version gets a six-core CPU and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. All three retain the same seven-core GPU. Here is what actually changes, what the first Geekbench result tells us, and which configuration makes sense.

Availability update — November 2, 2026: Apple announced the new iPad mini on October 26. Pre-orders began October 28, and customer availability is scheduled for Friday, November 6, 2026. The benchmark discussed below is from an early five-core model, not a retail review of every storage tier.

The 128GB and 256GB iPad mini 8 use an A20 Pro with a five-core CPU (two super cores and three efficiency cores) and a 16-core Neural Engine. The 512GB model has a six-core CPU (two super cores and four efficiency cores) and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. The GPU is seven-core on every tier, so the storage upgrade does not add GPU cores. The 256GB and 512GB models are also the only ones that can be configured with nano-texture display glass.

iPad mini 8 128GB vs 256GB vs 512GB: A20 Pro chip differences

Apple’s technical specifications confirm a processor split based on storage capacity. This is not a difference in the name of the chip: every model is marketed as having A20 Pro. The actual CPU and Neural Engine configurations differ, however, and that distinction matters if you are comparing the $699 entry model with the $999 512GB version.

512GB
US Wi-Fi launch price: $999

The biggest practical distinction is between the CPU and Neural Engine configurations. The 256GB version doubles the storage of the base model but does not add CPU or Neural Engine capacity. The 512GB version is the only tier with the full six-core CPU configuration and Apple’s Dual 16-core Neural Engine description.

Important wording: Apple calls the 128GB and 256GB processor a five-core A20 Pro configuration. Some reporting describes it as a binned chip, but the safest wording for a buyer guide is simply “five-core A20 Pro configuration”. Do not imply that Apple has confirmed a defective or lower-quality processor.

iPad mini 8 Geekbench 7 scores: how fast is the five-core A20 Pro?

GSMArena reported an early Geekbench 7.1.0 result for an iPad mini identified as iPad19,2, the Wi-Fi plus Cellular version. It recorded 3,879 points in single-core and 9,870 in multi-core. Its five-core CPU configuration corresponds to the 128GB or 256GB version, not the 512GB model.

Against the cited iPhone 18 Pro Max result, the five-core iPad mini result is approximately 4% lower in single-core and 14% lower in multi-core. Compared with the cited iPad mini 7 result, it is approximately 47% higher in single-core and 39% higher in multi-core. These percentages are arithmetic comparisons of reported scores, not guarantees of the speed difference in every app.

Benchmark limitation: There is no verified Geekbench result here for a retail 512GB iPad mini 8. Do not label 4,024 / 11,424 as a 512GB iPad mini score; those figures belong to the iPhone 18 Pro Max comparison device. Real-world results can vary with software, temperature, background activity and test conditions.

8.5-inch OLED display: does the iPad mini 8 support 120Hz ProMotion?

Advertisements

No. The new iPad mini adds an 8.5-inch OLED Super Retina XDR display, but it does not support ProMotion. Apple hardware engineering vice president Dave Pakula discussed the decision in an interview with Christopher Lawley. Independent reporting describes the panel as limited to a 60Hz refresh rate.

What improves

OLED pixels can turn off individually for deep blacks and high contrast. Apple lists a 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, 600 nits maximum SDR brightness and up to 1,200 nits peak brightness for HDR content.

What does not improve

The iPad mini does not gain the adaptive 10Hz–120Hz ProMotion experience found on supported iPad Pro displays. Buyers who prioritise 120Hz scrolling should compare an iPad Pro instead.

Be precise when describing brightness: 1,200 nits is the peak HDR figure, not the screen’s full-screen brightness. Apple lists up to 600 nits for SDR and 600 nits full-screen for XDR, with 1,200 nits peak for HDR content.

Nano-texture display glass is an option only on the 256GB and 512GB models. The 128GB model does not offer that finish. It is intended to reduce reflections in bright environments, but it is a configuration choice rather than a separate display size or refresh-rate upgrade.

iPad mini 8 battery capacity: 4,900 mAh and 18.9 Wh

Apple’s technical specifications list an 18.9-watt-hour rechargeable lithium-polymer battery. Apple’s EU energy label, reported by MacRumors, gives the capacity as 4,900 mAh. That is slightly below the iPad mini 7’s reported 5,034 mAh or 19.3 Wh battery.

Apple Wi-Fi battery estimateUp to 10 hoursUp to 10 hours

Apple rates the new model for up to 10 hours of web browsing on Wi-Fi or video playback, and up to 9 hours of web browsing on cellular data. These are Apple test estimates, not a promise of identical runtime for every user’s brightness, apps, network conditions or workload.

The new model supports fast charging: Apple says it can reach up to 50% in around 30 minutes with a USB-C power adapter capable of providing 35W or higher. That adapter is sold separately.

Acoustic Display and IP67 water resistance: how the new design works

The iPad mini 8 has an IP67 rating under IEC standard 60529. Apple specifies a maximum depth of 1 metre for up to 30 minutes. This is a laboratory rating, not a guarantee that water damage cannot happen. Liquid damage and resistance can change as a device ages or is damaged, so do not treat the tablet as waterproof.

Apple also replaces conventional visible speaker grilles with its Acoustic Display audio system. In the interview with Christopher Lawley, Apple’s hardware engineering vice president explains that sound is routed through hidden ports between the display glass and aluminium enclosure. The system is part of the redesigned enclosure and its stereo audio arrangement.

Useful distinction: IP67 means tested dust protection and defined water immersion resistance. It does not mean the iPad mini is designed for swimming, salt water, high-pressure water or routine underwater use.

External display, USB-C and wireless connectivity

Apple lists a USB-C port with DisplayPort support and USB 3 data transfer up to 10Gbps. Its technical specifications state support for one external display at up to 4K resolution and 60Hz. This is the safe, directly documented claim to use in the article.

The new iPad mini also adds Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6 support, alongside Thread. Apple lists a USB-C cable and a 20W USB-C power adapter in the box. Do not claim that the tablet supports a particular extended desktop workflow solely because it has 12GB of RAM; that workflow depends on the operating system and app support, not just the processor.
