How the 1.6% Rogers & Fido Credit Card Processing Fee Works in 2027

Rogers Communications confirmed that beginning January 17, 2027, consumer and select small-business customers paying a Rogers or Fido bill by credit card will be charged a 1.6% credit card processing fee. This percentage charge applies to both manual one-time credit card payments and recurring automatic (pre-authorized) credit card payments.

Check Your Exemption Status First: You will pay $0 (0%) in credit card processing fees if your billing address or plan falls into any of Rogers’ official exempt categories:
  • Quebec Customers: Exempt under Section 224(c) of the Quebec Consumer Protection Act, which prohibits merchants from charging a higher price for a good or service based on payment method.
  • Connected for Success: Customers enrolled in Rogers’ low-income and accessibility program are excluded from the 1.6% charge.
  • Former Shaw Mobile Customers: Accounts on migrated former Shaw Mobile plans are exempt.
  • Excluded Business Accounts: Rogers Business accounts with 12-digit account numbers, Enterprise customers, and Shaw Business customers do not pay the 1.6% credit card surcharge (note: 9-digit Rogers Business accounts are subject to the fee outside Quebec).

Does Paying with a Rogers Red Mastercard Waive the 1.6% Fee?

No. Rogers confirmed there is no fee waiver for paying your Rogers or Fido bill with a co-branded Rogers Red Mastercard or Rogers Red World Elite Mastercard—the 1.6% processing fee still applies starting January 17, 2027 unless you live in Quebec or hold an exempt plan.

However, Rogers Bank announced a rewards update effective November 18, 2026:

What Ends on Nov. 18, 2026

Rogers Bank is discontinuing the 1.5x redemption bonus when redeeming cash back toward Rogers, Fido, or Shaw purchases. Points will redeem at a 1 point = $0.01 ratio.

What Starts on Nov. 18, 2026

From November 18, 2026, Rogers Red cardholders can earn 5% cash back on eligible Rogers-family purchases, including eligible Rogers, Fido, Shaw and Comwave bill payments, subject to the card’s annual spend limit. In-store bill payments do not qualify, and the applicable lower earn rate applies after the limit is reached.

Net Math After Jan. 17, 2027

On eligible bill payments within the annual spend limit, earning 5% cash back on the bill while paying a 1.6% processing fee leaves an estimated +3.4% net return ($5.10/mo or $61.20/yr net gain on a $150 monthly bill, assuming the fee itself does not earn rewards). On a 1.0% or 1.5% card, the 1.6% fee exceeds the rewards earned.

Fee-Free Ways to Pay Your Rogers or Fido Bill

If you prefer to avoid the 1.6% credit card charge entirely, Rogers lists several payment methods that carry a $0 processing fee after January 17, 2027:

1. Direct Bank Debit (PAD)

Pre-authorized debit directly from your Canadian chequing or savings account avoids the 1.6% fee and keeps your monthly bill payment automated.

2. Visa Debit & Debit Mastercard

Co-badged bank debit cards draw funds directly from your deposit account and are excluded from the 1.6% credit card processing charge.

3. Online Banking, Cheques & Gift Cards

Paying Rogers or Fido as a payee through your bank’s online bill-pay portal, or paying with cheques, prepaid cards, or Rogers gift cards, also avoids the credit card processing charge.

Mobile-Device Insurance Note: Before switching away from credit-card payments, check your card’s current mobile-device insurance certificate. Coverage requirements vary by card, and this calculator does not determine or value insurance coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions: Rogers & Fido 1.6% Credit Card Fee

When does the 1.6% Rogers and Fido credit card processing fee start?

The 1.6% credit card processing charge begins on January 17, 2027. It applies to both one-time credit card payments and pre-authorized (automatic) monthly credit card payments for Rogers and Fido consumer and 9-digit business accounts.

Who is exempt from the 1.6% Rogers and Fido credit card fee?

Quebec customers are exempt under the Quebec Consumer Protection Act. Rogers also excludes customers on Connected for Success plans, former Shaw Mobile customers on migrated plans, Shaw Business accounts, Enterprise accounts, and Rogers Business customers with 12-digit account numbers.

Does the 1.6% fee apply if I pay with a Rogers Red Mastercard?

Yes—unless your account is in Quebec or another exempt category, the 1.6% fee applies even when paying with a Rogers Bank Mastercard. However, from November 18, 2026, Rogers Red cardholders can earn 5% cash back on eligible Rogers-family purchases, including eligible bill payments, subject to the card’s annual spend limit. In-store bill payments do not qualify, and the applicable lower earn rate applies after the limit is reached.

Is GST or HST charged on top of the 1.6% credit card fee?

Under Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) GST/HST Info Sheet GI-200 (Application of the GST/HST to Credit Card Surcharges), a qualifying credit card surcharge that is shown and charged separately is generally not subject to GST/HST because it is treated as consideration for an exempt supply of a financial service. The estimate in this calculator assumes that the processing charge is shown separately and qualifies for the GST/HST treatment described in CRA Info Sheet GI-200. Confirm the final charge and any applicable taxes in the Rogers or Fido payment summary when the fee takes effect.
