Quick answer: paid hours = finish time minus start time minus unpaid break. A 9:00 am start, 5:30 pm finish and 30 minute unpaid break is 8 paid hours (8.00 in decimal). If the finish is earlier than the start, the shift runs past midnight.

Worked examples

9:00 to 17:30, 30 minute break
8 paid hours, which is 8.00 decimal hours.
22:00 to 06:00, 30 minute break
7h 30m paid, which is 7.50 decimal hours.
Split shift 07:00 to 11:00 and 15:00 to 19:00
8 paid hours across two shifts.
Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 17:30, 30 minute breaks
40 paid hours. With a 38 hour threshold setting, 2 hours are shown above that setting.
40 hours at $30 an hour, 38 hour threshold, 1.5 times
38 x $30 = $1,140.00, plus 2 x $45 = $90.00. Total $1,230.00 before tax, if your award pays 1.5 times above 38 hours.
Rounding a shift to 15 minutes
A shift of 7h 52m paid becomes 7h 45m. This is a simple rounding option, not an Australian payroll rounding rule.

Minutes to decimal hours

Decimal hours are hours plus minutes divided by 60. So 10 minutes is 0.17, 15 is 0.25, 20 is 0.33, 30 is 0.50, 40 is 0.67, 45 is 0.75 and 50 is 0.83.

Ordinary hours, overtime and breaks in Australia

Under the National Employment Standards, an employer generally cannot request or require a full-time employee to work more than 38 hours a week unless the additional hours are reasonable. For other employees the limit is the lesser of 38 hours and their ordinary hours. Awards and agreements can also set different ordinary hours and can include averaging arrangements over a longer period. Fair Work maximum weekly hours fact sheet.

Whether overtime is paid, and at what rate, comes from your award, enterprise agreement or employment contract. Fair Work: when overtime applies.

Paid and unpaid rest breaks and meal breaks are also set by awards and registered agreements, and the length varies. Fair Work: breaks.

Check your award. The overtime threshold, multiplier, fortnight mode and rounding in this tool are calculation settings you control, not a ruling on what you are owed. Penalty rates, loadings, allowances, leave and superannuation are not included.

Minimum wage, casual loading and superannuation

From 1 July 2026 the National Minimum Wage is $26.44 an hour, or $1,004.90 for a 38 hour week before tax. This is the floor for employees not covered by an award or enterprise agreement, and most awards set a higher rate. Fair Work: minimum wages.

A casual employee on the National Minimum Wage also gets a 25 percent casual loading, taking their rate to $33.05 an hour. Fair Work minimum wages fact sheet. Superannuation is paid on top of these rates at the standard 12 percent superannuation guarantee rate, and is not included in the gross pay figure this calculator shows.

Keep your own record of hours

Employers must keep time and wages records for 7 years. Fair Work record-keeping guidance. Keeping your own record makes it easier to check a payslip. The Fair Work Ombudsman also offers a free Record My Hours app that needs no registration.

Daylight saving and overnight shifts

This calculator counts the hours shown on the clock and does not apply time zone or daylight saving clock-change adjustments. The Fair Work Ombudsman says that if an award or agreement is silent, employees working overnight when daylight saving starts or ends are paid by the clock. Some awards say otherwise, so check yours. Frequently asked questions

What is Timesheet Calculator Australia?

It turns start and finish times into paid hours, takes off unpaid breaks and totals the result for a week or fortnight. It can also estimate gross pay.

Can I calculate fortnightly hours?

Yes. Choose Fortnightly to enter two weeks. Overtime can be measured for each week separately or across the whole fortnight.

Can it handle overnight shifts?

Yes. If the finish is earlier than the start, the finish is treated as the next day.

Can I enter split shifts?

Yes. Use Add shift to put a second shift on the same day.

Does it work out Australian overtime automatically?

No. Overtime and penalty rates depend on your award or agreement. This tool applies the hours limit and multiplier you enter and does not decide what you are owed.

Can I download the timesheet?

Yes. Download a CSV for a spreadsheet, or use Print to save a PDF.

Methodology

Each start and finish is converted to minutes. If the finish is earlier than the start, 24 hours is added. The unpaid break is deducted, then optional rounding is applied to the shift length before day and period totals are added.

With overtime estimation on, hours up to your threshold setting are paid at your rate and hours above it at your rate multiplied by your chosen multiplier. One multiplier is applied to all overtime hours, so tiered overtime such as time and a half then double time needs a separate calculation for each tier. Results are estimates before tax.
