What happens on October 13?

Microsoft says Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro devices will no longer receive fixes for known issues, time zone updates, technical support, or monthly security and preview updates after the end-of-updates date. Microsoft recommends moving to the latest version of Windows 11.

Your PC does not stop working. The change is that it stops getting protection against new security threats. Staying on an unsupported release is a security risk, not a shutdown.

Microsoft’s September 22 update was the final preview update for 24H2. Supported editions of 24H2 keep getting monthly security updates until their own date.

What to do if you are on 24H2 Home or Pro

  1. Open Settings, then Windows Update and check for updates. Install the latest cumulative update first if one is waiting.
  2. Install 25H2 or 26H2 when it is offered. Either one is supported, and neither needs a reinstall. To be among the first to get 26H2, turn on “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” in Windows Update.
  3. Be patient if 26H2 is missing. Microsoft rolls it out in phases and can hold it back on PCs with a known compatibility problem.
  4. Back up your important files. The update is small, but a current backup is a sensible habit before any feature update.
  5. Check the version afterwards. Return to Settings, System, About, and confirm it now shows 25H2 or 26H2.

25H2 or 26H2: which should you pick?

Windows 11 26H2 is generally available, but Microsoft is expanding the rollout in phases and may place safeguard holds on devices with known compatibility issues. Eligible 24H2 and 25H2 devices receive it through an enablement package, a small download that generally needs one restart. 24H2, 25H2 and 26H2 share the same underlying code, so moving between them is quick. Pick whichever Windows Update offers you.

26H2 gives you the longest runway for Home and Pro, until October 10, 2028. 25H2 runs until October 12, 2027. If you are on 25H2 already, no October 13 deadline applies to you. Microsoft says 26H2 starts a new support period.

Windows 11 26H1 is not the same as 26H2

26H1 is a specialized Windows 11 release for select new hardware that started shipping in early 2026. It is not a normal in-place update path from existing 24H2 or 25H2 PCs. If your PC came with 26H1, it is supported until March 14, 2028 for Home and Pro, and Microsoft’s 26H2 rollout is for 24H2 and 25H2 PCs.

Windows 11 SE is also ending

Microsoft says support for Windows 11 SE, including software updates, technical assistance and security fixes, ends in October 2026. 24H2 is the last SE release. The device keeps working, but Microsoft recommends moving to a device that runs another edition of Windows 11. Do not treat the October 13 Home and Pro date as the confirmed SE date, because Microsoft says only October 2026.

How to check your Windows version

For IT administrators

Enterprise and Education editions follow the longer dates in the table above. Windows 11 23H2 Enterprise, Education and IoT Enterprise end on November 10, 2026, which is close. Check any managed fleet against the Microsoft release health page before you plan a rollout. Microsoft has marked the reported domain-trust issue, which affects some Credential Guard machines using Machine Identity Isolation, as mitigated and documents a recovery path. A permanent fix is still to come, so test before wide deployment.
