Why Canada needs more than one working-day calendar
Canada does not have one universal statutory-holiday list for every workplace and every purpose. Federally regulated employees have a federal list of general holidays, the CRA publishes its own public-holiday calendar for tax deadlines, and provinces and territories have their own employment standards and holiday rules.
That is why this Working Days Calculator Canada lets you choose the calendar instead of subtracting a generic nationwide holiday list from every result.
What you can calculate
- Working days or business days between two dates.
- Add a number of working days to a start date.
- Subtract working days from a date.
- Find the next CRA business day for a due date that lands on a weekend or CRA-recognized public holiday.
- Use a Monday–Sunday custom workweek.
- Include, exclude or override individual holidays.
- Add company closures, local days, substitute days or other custom non-working dates.
All 13 Canadian province and territory profiles
These profiles are intended for calendar planning. They do not attempt to calculate holiday pay, eligibility, collective-agreement substitutions, industry exemptions, or every local/regional civic closure.
Working days vs. business days in Canada
People often use “working days,” “business days” and “weekdays” interchangeably, but a deadline can define them differently. A banking agreement, court rule, settlement process, employment contract or government program may use its own holiday calendar and substitution rules.
For ordinary planning, the safest approach is to select the calendar that matches the process, keep Monday–Friday unless your work schedule differs, and use the audit trail to verify every date that was excluded.
How this Canadian calculator counts days
- It reads the selected start/end date or the date plus/minus a requested number of working days.
- It tests whether each date falls on an included working-week day.
- If holiday exclusion is enabled, it checks the holiday dates belonging to your selected Canadian profile.
- If custom dates are enabled, it checks your added non-working dates too.
- It records the reason each date was counted or excluded, so a result is explainable rather than a black-box number.
CRA next-business-day mode
Use the CRA next day mode when you need a simple calendar check for a CRA due date. If the date is a Saturday, Sunday, or a CRA-recognized public holiday, the tool advances to the next qualifying business day under the selected CRA calendar.
The CRA states that when a due date falls on a Saturday, Sunday or a CRA-recognized public holiday, the payment is considered on time if the CRA receives it on or before the next business day. Provincial and territorial holidays can affect other deadlines, which is why the CRA source is kept separate from the provincial profiles.
Canada holiday rules worth knowing
Ontario: the Employment Standards Act lists nine public holidays and does not make Easter Monday, the first Monday in August or Remembrance Day public holidays under the general list.
Quebec: the statutory list has eight holidays, with Good Friday or Easter Monday at the employer’s option, plus National Patriots’ Day, the Quebec National Holiday, Canada Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Alberta: the province lists nine general holidays and separately identifies optional holidays employers may recognize.
Saskatchewan: it has ten public statutory holidays; the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is not a provincial public holiday under the Saskatchewan Employment Act, although employers may observe it.
British Columbia: the province lists 11 statutory holidays and specifically says Easter Sunday, Easter Monday and Boxing Day are not statutory holidays in B.C.
FAQs
Does this include Saturdays and Sundays?
Not by default. Monday–Friday is selected, so Saturday and Sunday are excluded. You can turn any day of the week on when your schedule is different.
Does “between dates” include the start and end date?
Yes. If a date is inside the selected range and passes the workweek, holiday and custom-date rules, it is counted.
Can I calculate working days across years?
Yes. The engine works across 2026, 2027 and 2028 as one continuous date range, provided the selected date range stays within the supported calendar years.
Can I use this for Quebec?
Yes. Choose Quebec and select whether your calendar should use Good Friday or Easter Monday for the employer-choice statutory holiday.
Why is the federal result different from an Ontario result?
Federal employment standards and Ontario employment standards use different holiday lists. The calculator therefore keeps their profiles separate instead of combining them.
Does this calculate statutory holiday pay?
No. It calculates working-day dates. Holiday-pay eligibility, qualifying conditions, replacement days, collective agreements and sector-specific rules can require a different calculation.
Can I account for a company closure?
Yes. Add the closure dates under Custom non-working dates and keep the custom-date toggle enabled.
What does the CRA next-day mode do?
It returns the input date when it is already a qualifying CRA business day. Otherwise it moves forward to the next qualifying date.
Methodology and source policy
This calculator uses explicit date rules for the supported 2026–2028 calendar years and links each profile to government sources. It does not scrape a third-party holiday list at runtime and it does not hide a holiday inside a generic nationwide rule.
Where a government source describes multiple employment situations, this page uses a clearly labelled planning baseline. For example, federal employment standards can create substitute or paid holiday arrangements when a holiday falls on a non-working day. Those employee-specific arrangements are not silently guessed; you can model a known substitute day with a custom non-working date.
