Outlook for Mac Shows British Columbia (UTC−08:00)? What to Do

If New Outlook for Mac shows British Columbia (UTC−08:00) or does not offer the expected UTC−07:00 time zone, do not assume the option is correct just because its name says British Columbia. Here is what has been reported, what to check, and how to protect meetings scheduled for November 1, 2026 or later.

Current status: UBC IT’s advisory, updated October 23, tells its users not to select the new “British Columbia” option in Outlook for Mac until it confirms that the option works correctly. It recommends using Outlook on the web for affected meetings. UVic has also published time-change guidance for its community. If you use a managed work or school account, follow your own IT team’s instructions.

Quick answer

Most of British Columbia is on permanent Pacific time, UTC−07:00. On November 1, 2026, clocks in most of B.C. will not go back one hour. If Outlook for Mac shows a British Columbia option marked UTC−08:00, do not treat it as the correct new zone. Update and restart your Mac, use Outlook on the web to check the time-zone option and affected meetings, and do not manually shift meetings by one hour.

What exactly is the Outlook for Mac problem?

Advertisements

British Columbia’s last seasonal clock change for most of the province was March 8, 2026. The province is moving to permanent Pacific time, UTC−07:00. On November 1, clocks will stay where they are instead of moving back to UTC−08:00.

Some calendar applications and existing meetings may still rely on the old seasonal Pacific time-zone rule. Affected appointments on or after November 1 can appear one hour off depending on the time-zone rule stored in the event and the app displaying it.

Two recent sources describe the specific Mac problem. A Microsoft Q&A question dated October 9 reports that New Outlook for Mac offered UTC−08:00 but not UTC−07:00; the moderator said the new zone was not available in their Mac test environment and recommended Outlook on the web. Separately, UBC IT’s October 23 update says its users should not select the new “British Columbia” Outlook for Mac option while it checks whether it works correctly.

This does not prove every Outlook account or app version is affected. The safe rule is to check the exact UTC offset, your Outlook version, and your organisation’s current instructions.

Use the offset and your account’s support instructions, not only the time-zone name.

Do not move meetings yet

Check the UTC offset shown, open Outlook on the web, and review meetings scheduled for November 1 or later. Do not shift meeting start times in bulk.

How to troubleshoot Outlook for Mac step by step

1. Update macOS and restart your Mac

  1. Open System Settings.
  2. Choose General, then Software Update.
  3. Install any applicable macOS updates available for your Mac.
  4. Restart your Mac after the update, especially if prompted.
  5. For most locations in B.C., check that your Mac’s location-based time zone is set to Vancouver.

Apple represents time zones by city, so your Mac settings may not display the same “Pacific Time (British Columbia)” label used by Microsoft. Do not change the Mac’s time zone to compensate for one incorrect meeting; set it to your actual location and troubleshoot the event separately.

2. Check the time-zone setting in Outlook on the web

  1. Open Outlook on the web and sign in.
  2. Open Settings, then Calendar, then View.
  3. Find Time zones and the option for displaying your calendar time zone.
  4. If offered and appropriate for your location, choose (UTC−07:00) Pacific Time (British Columbia).
  5. Save the setting, then inspect the start times of important November meetings.

The new B.C. option may appear above the currently selected option rather than in numerical order, so scroll through the list. If it is unavailable, do not substitute the Mac option labelled UTC−08:00; follow your IT team’s advice or contact support.

Managed-account caution: UBC IT has reported a separate Microsoft issue that can hide free/busy availability if users accept a prompt to change their meeting-hours time zone. UBC advises its users not to click “Yes, update” on that prompt while the issue remains. Follow your own organisation’s instructions; do not copy UBC’s temporary “Yukon” meeting-hours workaround to a personal account without a reason.

3. Review existing meetings scheduled for November 1 or later

Changing your default calendar time zone does not necessarily update the time-zone rule stored in every event. Review important appointments, particularly recurring meetings with attendees in other provinces or countries.

  • If you organised the meeting: use the supported version of Outlook to inspect the event’s time-zone field. Where a correction is needed, change the event’s time zone while preserving the intended local start time, then send the update.
  • If another person organised it: do not manually drag the invitation to another time. Ask the organiser to confirm and correct the meeting if necessary.
  • If it is a recurring series: review moved occurrences and exceptions before saving. Microsoft warns that changing a series time zone can reset exceptions.
  • If a room or resource is booked: verify the booking response after the organiser sends an update.

4. If the Mac app and web calendar still disagree

  1. Compare the same event in both apps and record the date, start time, and displayed time zone.
  2. Check whether one meeting or many are affected.
  3. Install available Outlook updates and restart the app.
  4. For a work or school account, contact your Microsoft 365 administrator or IT help desk.
  5. For a personal account, submit feedback through Outlook’s Help or Feedback menu if the option remains missing.

Do not make repeated edits simply to force the two screens to match. Confirm the intended local meeting time first.

Does this affect every part of British Columbia?

No. Most of B.C., including Vancouver and Victoria, will use UTC−07:00 year-round. Golden and the East Kootenay area have chosen to remain on Mountain Daylight Time (UTC−06:00) year-round, aligned with Alberta. If you live in one of those communities, do not automatically apply Vancouver’s time zone.

Frequently asked questions

Should I select British Columbia (UTC−08:00) in Outlook for Mac?
Do not select it simply because the location name looks right. As of October 23, UBC IT tells its users not to select that option until it confirms it works correctly. Other users should check the exact offset and current instructions for their Outlook version and account.
What is the correct time zone for most of B.C.?
Most of B.C. uses permanent Pacific time at UTC−07:00. Golden and the East Kootenays are exceptions and remain at UTC−06:00 year-round.
Will updating my Outlook calendar time zone fix old meetings?
Not necessarily. The default calendar display zone and the time-zone rule stored in an individual meeting are separate. Organisers should review future events and recurring series.
Should I move every meeting by one hour?
No. Do not shift meetings in bulk. Confirm the intended time, and ask the organiser to update an invitation if you are an attendee and it looks wrong.
Is Outlook on the web the workaround for New Outlook for Mac?
It is the recommended route in the current UBC guidance for its users, and a Microsoft Q&A moderator also recommended Outlook on the web when the new zone was unavailable in the Mac test environment. Follow any newer instructions from Microsoft or your organisation.
