Ontario · Night Shift · Time Change Guide

In most of Ontario, the 1 a.m. hour happens twice on Sunday, November 1, 2026. Clocks go from 2:00 a.m. back to 1:00 a.m., so an 11 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday shift spans nine elapsed hours before unpaid breaks, not eight. Kenora and the Central Time northwest are not scheduled to repeat any hour.

Live status, October 28, 2026: Ontario Regulation 333/26 is scheduled to take effect on November 1, 2026. It sets UTC−05:00 year-round for the part of Ontario west of the 90th meridian, which includes Kenora. Most of Ontario still falls back. Check your exact location and your employer’s policy before you rely on a schedule.

Quick answer: does 1 a.m. repeat in Ontario?

Yes, in most of Ontario, including Toronto and Ottawa. At 2:00 a.m. EDT on November 1, 2026, clocks move back to 1:00 a.m. EST, so 1:00 to 1:59 a.m. occurs twice. A night worker on shift at that moment works one extra elapsed hour.

In most of Ontario, an 11 p.m. Saturday to 7 a.m. Sunday shift on November 1 spans nine elapsed hours before unpaid breaks. Subtract unpaid break time to calculate the hours worked.

No repeat is expected in the Kenora, Dryden and Fort Frances region, or in Atikokan, Pickle Lake and Mishkeegogamang First Nation (formerly New Osnaburgh). Those communities do not fall back.

Enter your shift. The calculator counts real elapsed time, not just the numbers on the wall clock. It shows what a clock-only time card would say next to the time that actually passed, after your unpaid break.

Where do you work?

This tool counts elapsed time only. It does not decide pay or overtime. To add up a timesheet, you can use our Time Card Calculator for the arithmetic only. It uses US defaults, including USD pay and a 40-hour overtime threshold, which are not Ontario rules.

Does the extra hour automatically mean extra pay?

An extra elapsed hour does not, by itself, determine how your employer must code or compensate a night shift. Record the hours actually worked and check your employment contract, collective agreement, and applicable employment standards. The treatment of the repeated hour can depend on the rules that apply to your job.

For employees covered by Ontario’s general overtime rule, overtime usually begins after 44 hours in a work week. There are exemptions and special thresholds, so the additional hour does not automatically mean that this particular shift earns overtime pay.

Ask before the shift. Collective agreements and employer policies can contain specific wording for the repeated hour. If you are unsure, ask your employer, union or the Ontario Ministry of Labour how it will be recorded and paid.

How to fill in an Ontario night shift time card on November 1

  • Write the real start and end times, then add a note: “Clocks went back, 1 a.m. repeated.”
  • If you record a time between 1:00 and 1:59 a.m., mark whether it is EDT (first) or EST (second).
  • Record your unpaid break separately.
  • Keep your own copy of the start time, end time and break.
  • Check your next pay stub and ask your payroll contact if the shift looks wrong.

Does Kenora change clocks on November 1, 2026?

No. Ontario Regulation 333/26 is scheduled to take effect on November 1, 2026 and sets UTC−05:00 year-round for the part of Ontario west of the 90th meridian. That covers Kenora, Dryden and Fort Frances. Nothing repeats, so a night shift there spans the same elapsed time as on any other night. Manitoba is on the same time.

The regulation defines the area by longitude, so check the exact location of your workplace rather than assuming every northwestern community follows the same practice.

Atikokan, Pickle Lake and Mishkeegogamang First Nation (formerly New Osnaburgh) already stay on Eastern Standard Time all year. Their clocks do not move either.

When the hour goes missing: March 14, 2027

In spring, 2:00 a.m. jumps to 3:00 a.m. in most of Ontario. An 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift spans seven elapsed hours that night, before unpaid breaks. How that is recorded depends on your employer and contract, so check before the date. See our Canada clock change guide for the full 2026 and 2027 dates.

Ontario night shift November 1, 2026: FAQs

Does 1 a.m. repeat in Ontario on November 1, 2026?

Yes in most of Ontario. At 2:00 a.m. EDT clocks go back to 1:00 a.m. EST, so 1:00 to 1:59 a.m. happens twice. Not in the Kenora, Dryden and Fort Frances region, or in Atikokan, Pickle Lake and Mishkeegogamang.

How long is an 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift on November 1, 2026?

In most of Ontario it spans nine elapsed hours before unpaid breaks. Subtract unpaid break time to calculate the hours worked. In Kenora it spans eight.

Do Ontario night shift workers get paid for the extra hour?

It depends on your employment terms. Record the hours actually worked and check your contract, collective agreement and employment standards. Collective agreements can have specific wording for the repeated hour.

Can the extra hour cause overtime?

Not automatically. Overtime in Ontario’s general rule usually begins after 44 hours in a work week, but exemptions and special thresholds exist. Check the rules that apply to your job.

Does Kenora change clocks in November 2026?

No. Ontario Regulation 333/26 is scheduled to take effect on November 1, 2026 and sets UTC−05:00 year-round west of the 90th meridian, which includes Kenora.

What if my shift starts or ends during the repeated hour?

Record whether the time is EDT or EST. A time such as 1:30 a.m. can mean two different real moments. The calculator has separate first-or-second choices for the start and the end, and your employer should confirm which one counts.

What happens to my night shift in March 2027?

Clocks jump from 2:00 a.m. to 3:00 a.m. on March 14, 2027 in most of Ontario, so an 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift spans seven elapsed hours before unpaid breaks.

Will my phone clock be right during the change?

Phones with current updates and automatic time zone settings usually follow Ontario’s change. Time-card systems and wall clocks may not, so confirm the real time before you record hours.
