Which Fire TV Sticks Can Sideload Apps? Vega OS vs Fire OS (2026)

Amazon has moved some newer Fire TV Sticks from Android-based Fire OS to its Vega OS platform. That matters if you install apps from outside the Amazon Appstore. Check your exact model before buying—or find out why Downloader and Android APK files do not work on some newer sticks.

Quick answer: Which Fire TV Sticks block Android APK sideloading?

The operating system—not the words “Fire TV Stick”—determines whether standard Android APK installation is supported.

Vega OS: standard Android APK sideloading is not supported
  • Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026) — AFTCR001
  • Fire TV Stick HD (2nd Gen, 2026) — AFTCL001
  • Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025) — AFTCA002
Amazon does not support consumer installation of apps from outside its Appstore on these Vega devices.
Android-based Fire OS: APK sideloading remains supported
  • Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen, 2023)
  • Fire TV Stick 4K Plus (2025)
  • Fire TV Stick 4K (2nd Gen, 2023)
  • Fire TV Stick HD with Alexa Voice Remote (2024)
  • Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen, 2022)
Many older Fire OS devices also support Android APK installation, subject to app and OS compatibility.
Important: “Developer Mode” on Vega is not the same as consumer sideloading. Amazon provides a developer workflow for testing native Vega apps. It does not turn a Vega Stick into an Android device or make ordinary Android .apk files installable. See the Vega Developer Mode documentation and Amazon’s developer-community clarification.

Fire TV Stick model comparison: Vega OS vs Fire OS

Use the generation and build model together. The names are easy to confuse—especially the two different HD sticks.

Do not confuse the two HD models. The 2024 Fire TV Stick HD with Alexa Voice Remote uses Fire OS 7 and supports APK sideloading. The 2026 second-generation Fire TV Stick HD uses Vega OS and does not support ordinary Android APK installation. Check the release year and build model—not just “Fire TV Stick HD.”

Amazon’s specification pages can be updated as firmware changes. This table identifies the OS family and normal consumer sideloading position, not a guarantee that every third-party app will work. For the latest device data, use Amazon’s individual Fire TV specifications and its device comparison table.

Does Vega OS have Developer Mode? What .vpkg means

Yes. Amazon documents a Developer Mode for Vega devices, but it is intended for software development and testing. It is not a consumer setting that restores Android APK sideloading.

Android APK (.apk) An Android APK is packaged for Android’s application runtime. Vega OS is a different platform, so an ordinary Android APK—such as an Android build of a media player—does not become compatible just because Developer Mode is enabled.
Native Vega package (.vpkg) Developers can build an application for Vega and use Amazon’s Vega SDK/CLI and Developer Mode to deploy a compatible package for testing. That workflow requires development tools and a Vega-built app; it is not a way to install arbitrary Android APK files.
  1. Amazon’s documented developer workflow starts from Enable Developer Mode.
  2. Vega apps are packaged and installed through the Vega CLI, which documents installation of .vpkg packages.
  3. Amazon’s Developer Community has clarified that installing apps outside the Amazon Appstore is not supported for ordinary users of Vega devices; developer testing is a separate workflow. Read Amazon’s response in the Vega feature-request discussion.

Bottom line: If your main reason for buying a Fire TV Stick is installing Android APKs with Downloader, choose a Fire OS model rather than a Vega OS model.

How to check whether your Fire TV Stick runs Vega OS or Fire OS

On a Fire TV Stick or Cube, open Settings → My Fire TV → About and look for the software/OS information and exact device name. On a Fire TV television, the menu wording can differ; check Settings → Device & Software → About or the manufacturer’s device information page.

  1. If the software identifies Fire OS (for example, Fire OS 7 or Fire OS 8), the device is Android-based and supports standard APK sideloading, subject to app compatibility and the device’s current settings.
  2. If the software identifies Vega OS, it is not an Android-based Fire OS device and ordinary Android APK installation is not supported.
  3. If the screen is unclear, use the full product name and generation. For the three Vega Sticks listed here, the build models are AFTCR001, AFTCL001 and AFTCA002.
Do not use the seven-click Developer Options trick as your OS test. The availability or absence of a Developer Options menu is not a reliable way to distinguish every device. Identify the OS or exact model instead.

Downloader missing from “Install unknown apps” on an older Fire TV Stick?

Advertisements

If your device is an Android-based Fire OS model, a missing Downloader permission does not automatically mean Amazon has converted it to Vega OS or permanently disabled sideloading.

In September 2026, Amazon told AFTVnews that a Fire TV Settings update had a bug that could make the Install unknown apps list incomplete or empty on some Fire TV devices. Amazon said a fix would roll out in a subsequent Fire TV Settings update. 9to5Google reported Amazon’s explanation on September 15, 2026.

Try these checks on a Fire OS device

  1. Confirm that the device is a Fire OS model using the checker or comparison table above.
  2. Check for and install available Fire TV software and Settings updates, then restart the device.
  3. Open Settings → My Fire TV → Developer Options → Install unknown apps. On devices where Developer Options is hidden, select the device name in About seven times to reveal it.
  4. If Downloader is still missing, do not assume an update will fix every device. Check Amazon’s support information and the app developer’s current troubleshooting guidance. Avoid uninstalling a working Downloader installation while diagnosing the issue.

Which Fire TV Stick should you buy if APK sideloading matters?

Among the models in Amazon’s published device list, the Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Gen, 2023) is the strongest all-round option to investigate first if you want 4K streaming and Android APK sideloading: it uses Fire OS 8 and has 16 GB of storage. The Fire TV Stick 4K Plus (2025) is another Fire OS 8 option with 8 GB of storage.

Availability varies by country and retailer. Do not assume a plain “Fire TV Stick 4K” is the Android model: the 2026 third-generation 4K Stick is a Vega OS device. Confirm the exact model and operating system on Amazon’s specification page before ordering.

Also remember that Fire OS compatibility does not guarantee that every Android app will work. Check the app developer’s supported Android versions, CPU architecture, remote-control support and streaming/DRM requirements. Only download APKs from the app developer’s official site or another source you trust.

Frequently asked questions

Which Fire TV Sticks run Vega OS?

Amazon’s published device specifications identify the Fire TV Stick 4K (3rd Gen, 2026), Fire TV Stick HD (2nd Gen, 2026) and Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025) as Vega OS models. Their build models are AFTCR001, AFTCL001 and AFTCA002, respectively.
