Amazon Fire Tablets Discontinued? Will Yours Still Work?
Amazon is moving to a new Alexa Tablet lineup, but your existing Fire tablet does not stop working because of it. This guide covers what is changing, the security-update date Amazon publishes for your model, and whether a new tablet is worth buying.
Availability, prices and support dates below were checked against Amazon’s own pages on October 12, 2026. Confirm the latest status with Amazon before you buy or replace anything.
Quick answer
Existing Fire tablets do not become unusable because Amazon is ending the Fire tablet product line. Amazon is replacing it with Alexa Tablets, which run Android with Google Play Store access. Amazon publishes minimum security-update dates for selected Fire models, for example December 31, 2029 for the 2023 Fire HD 10 and July 31, 2030 for the 2023 Fire Max 11. Select your model in the checker below. An update date is not a promise that every app or service will work until then.
Check your Fire tablet’s published security-update date
Select the model that matches your device. The dates come from Amazon’s Fire Tablet Device Software Security Updates page and mean “at least through” the date shown. They are not a device retirement date.
Model not identified
Check the model and generation on your device, then compare it with Amazon’s official list.
Amazon’s table does not cover every older Fire model. If yours is missing, do not assume it has no support. Check the official page or the Manage Your Devices section of your Amazon account.
What exactly is changing?
Amazon announced a new product family called Alexa Tablets. Fire tablets use Fire OS and Amazon’s app ecosystem. The new tablets run Android, include Google Play Store access alongside Amazon apps, and integrate Alexa+ features. Amazon describes them as a new product line, not a software update for existing Fire tablets.
Reporting on the transition says Amazon is phasing out new Fire-branded tablet hardware, while existing inventory may continue to sell. That is different from disabling devices customers already own.
Do not panic-upgrade. The product-line change alone does not stop your Fire tablet from turning on, reading Kindle books, streaming supported apps or browsing. App compatibility and security updates depend on your model, software version and the services you use.
Official minimum security-update dates for listed Fire models
These are the minimum dates Amazon currently publishes. “At least through” matters: the date is not a promise about hardware lifespan, feature updates, app compatibility or the day any service stops working.

Amazon provides security updates for at least four years after a device is purchased new from Amazon as the seller, or through the later date shown in its official table. For devices bought from other sellers or purchased refurbished, check the published model-specific dates and Amazon’s Manage Your Devices page. Amazon may continue updates beyond these periods, but the dates are not a guarantee of how long a tablet will last or how long every app will remain compatible. Should you buy a remaining Fire tablet or a new Alexa Tablet?
A remaining Fire tablet may suit you if
- You mainly read Kindle books, stream video, browse or use apps already in Amazon’s ecosystem.
- You want a lower-cost tablet and find a legitimate sale on a model that fits your needs.
- You accept its app availability and support limits.
A new Alexa Tablet may suit you if
- You need Google Play Store access and standard Android apps such as Gmail or YouTube.
- You want the new hardware and the Alexa+ experience.
- The higher starting price makes sense for how you will use it.
The new Alexa Tablets begin shipping on October 14, 2026, in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Shipping starts on October 19 in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. Check Amazon’s announcement for current availability and regional pricing.
Amazon announced US starting prices of $229.99 for the Alexa Tablet 8, $329.99 for the Alexa Tablet 11 and $499.99 for the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro. The 12 Pro Nanomatte variant starts at $549.99. These sit in a different price tier from many older budget Fire tablets. Check the live Amazon listing for stock, discounts, regional pricing and ship dates, and see Amazon’s Alexa Tablet announcement for the full details.
What existing Fire tablet owners should do now
- Identify the exact model and generation. Use Settings and the device information screen. Wording differs across Fire OS versions.
- Check the model-specific update date. Use the checker above and Amazon’s official list, not a general headline.
- Install available system updates. Open Settings and check for device software updates.
- Check the apps you rely on. An update commitment does not guarantee that each app or streaming service stays compatible.
- Decide based on use. If the tablet does what you need and is still supported, there may be no reason to replace it now.
