Claude Max vs Ultra: $100 vs $200 & Usage Limits (2026)
On October 30, 2026, Anthropic renamed Max 5x to Max ($100/mo) and Max 20x to Ultra ($200/mo). Verified Ultra accounts no longer have a five-hour limit, but a weekly cap still applies. Here is what changed, how to check your account, and what the monthly API credits really cover.
Quick answer: what is the difference between Claude Max and Ultra?
Max ($100/mo) gives 5x Pro usage every five hours and every week, and keeps the five-hour limit. Ultra ($200/mo) gives 10x Pro usage every week and has no five-hour limit once your account is verified.
Both include Claude Code and Fable (up to 50% of your weekly limit). Max includes $100 and Ultra $200 in monthly Claude Platform API credits, They don’t cover interactive Claude Code or extra usage in Claude and Cowork, but running claude -p or the Agent SDK yourself with an API key from your linked Console organization can use them.
1. Ultra is 10x Pro weekly, not 20x
Anthropic’s Ultra documentation states 10 times the Pro plan’s usage every week. The “20x” name is retired. Max stays at 5x Pro every five hours and every week.
2. Only verified accounts lose the 5-hour limit
Anthropic verifies Ultra accounts automatically. Check Settings → Usage: if there is no “Current session” bar, you are verified. Phone verification at checkout does not count.
3. API credits don’t cover interactive Claude Code
The $100/$200 credits cover the Claude Platform (API, Playground, Managed Agents, Agent SDK). They don’t pay for interactive Claude Code or for extra usage in Claude and Cowork.

- Renamed: Max 5x is now Max ($100/mo). Max 20x is now Ultra ($200/mo). Existing subscribers move automatically with no price change (Ultra plan article).
- Five-hour limit removed for verified Ultra accounts. Unverified accounts get a temporary limit that Anthropic removes automatically once verification completes. Press coverage described the rollout as staged.
- Weekly cap unchanged in practice: Ultra is 10x Pro every week. The old “20x” label referred to the five-hour session allowance; weekly limits were added later.
- Billing: Max and Ultra are monthly-only. The $100 and $200 prices are web prices; app-store prices can differ.
Claude Pro vs Max vs Ultra: comparison table (November 2026)
Every row below is taken from Anthropic’s help articles for the Pro, Max and Ultra plans, plus the Fable, API credits and Claude Code articles.
| Feature | Claude Pro | Claude Max (was Max 5x) | Claude Ultra (was Max 20x) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Web price | $20/mo ($17/mo billed annually) | $100/mo, monthly only | $200/mo, monthly only |
| Weekly usage | Baseline (1x) | 5x Pro | 10x Pro |
| 5-hour limit | Applies | Applies (5x Pro per five hours) | None for verified accounts; temporary limit until verified |
| Claude Fable | Usage credits only (not in plan limits) | Included, up to 50% of weekly limit | Included, up to 50% of weekly limit |
| Monthly API credits | Not eligible | $100 (claim after 7 days) | $200 (claim after 7 days) |
| Credits cover interactive Claude Code? | N/A | No | No |
| Claude Code included | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Claude Code wrap-up allowance | Up to once per weekly period | Each time you reach a 5-hour limit, within the weekly limit | Not applicable once verified (works like Max while a temporary limit applies) |
The wrap-up allowance is a small, capped extension that lets Claude Code finish the step it is on, and Anthropic says it is rolling out gradually.
Team plans
Team plans are seat-based and have their own limits (see Anthropic’s Team and Enterprise help). Two verified details: monthly API credits are $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat, pooled into one balance capped at $500 a month; and Fable is included on Premium seats but runs on usage credits on Standard seats.

5 rules every Max and Ultra subscriber should know
- How to check if your Ultra account is verified. Anthropic verifies accounts automatically using factors like account and payment history. Open
Settings → Usage: no Current session bar means you are verified. Verifying your phone number at checkout is separate and does not remove the temporary limit (Ultra plan article). - No 5-hour limit does not mean unlimited. Ultra is 10x Pro every week. You can now spend a big share of that in one long session instead of being paused every five hours, but once the weekly limit is gone you wait for your fixed weekly reset, or use usage credits. Your reset day and time stay the same each week (Max plan article).
- Monthly API credits are for building, not for chatting or coding interactively. After seven days on Max or Ultra, claim them in
Settings → Billingon claude.ai by linking one Claude Console organization. You cannot change that link yourself later. Credits cover the Claude API, Playground, Managed Agents and the Agent SDK, do not roll over, and don’t change your plan limits.claude -pand the Agent SDK use them only when run with an API key from the linked organization; signed in with your plan, they draw from plan limits instead. Runs started by the Claude Code GitHub Action, an IDE extension or the desktop app count as Claude Code usage, so credits don’t cover them even with-p(API credits article). - Usage credits are a different thing. When you run out of a five-hour, weekly or Fable limit, you can enable pay-as-you-go usage credits in
Settings → Usage, billed at standard API rates. Monthly API credits can’t be applied to them (Manage usage credits). - Fable shares your weekly pool. On Max and Ultra you can use up to 50% of your weekly limit on Fable models, but that is a cap inside your weekly allowance, not an extra 50%. Fable uses the pool faster than other models (Fable on your plan).
Settings → Usage on the web or Claude Desktop. The button isn’t available on Claude Mobile or inside Claude Code in the terminal or IDE (What is a limit reset?).Is Claude Ultra worth it? Which plan fits you

The math is simple: Pro is $20 for 1x, Max is $100 for 5x, and Ultra is $200 for 10x. That is $20 per Pro-week of capacity on every tier, so Ultra doesn’t make usage cheaper. It makes it bigger and removes the five-hour pause.
| If this describes you… | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday chat, writing, light Claude Code | Pro ($20) | Baseline weekly usage; Fable only via usage credits. |
| You hit Pro limits most weeks | Max ($100) | 5x weekly usage, Fable included, $100 API credits. |
| Short, frequent Claude Code sessions | Max ($100) | The weekly cap is what binds you, so dropping the 5-hour limit adds little. |
| Long, uninterrupted agentic or multi-session Claude Code days | Ultra ($200) | No five-hour wall once verified, and twice Max’s weekly allowance. |
| You build on the Claude API alongside your plan | Ultra ($200) | $200/mo Claude Platform credits (Max gives $100). |
