Live status: Google’s change for accounts without an AI plan starts October 9, 2026. AI Plus subscribers get an email with their own date.

Quick answer

From October 9, 2026, Gemini accounts without a Google AI plan can use only Flash-Lite. Flash and Pro are removed. AI Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash but loses Pro, on a date Google emails to each subscriber. AI Pro and AI Ultra keep all three models, and Google lists Deep Think with Ultra. Gemini stays free, but model choice becomes a paid feature.

Which Gemini models do you get?

Choose your plan and the job you use Gemini for most. The checker shows your models, your usage limit and whether your plan covers that job.

Model access is Google’s published table. The job guidance is general, not a benchmark. Prices are US monthly prices as reported and can differ by country.

Gemini free is not ending. You can still use Gemini without a paid plan. What changes is which models you can pick. Before the change, Google’s US plans page listed Flash and limited Pro access for free accounts, as reported by Notebookcheck on October 5.

Deep Think: Why sources disagree

Reports conflict. 9to5Google said on October 3 that AI Pro would gain Deep Think, and several outlets repeated it. Google’s help page, when we checked on October 8, says Deep Think comes with an AI Ultra subscription. WinBuzzer noted the same gap on October 7. We follow Google’s page and treat Deep Think as Ultra only. Do not upgrade to Pro for Deep Think until it shows up in your own app.

Is Flash-Lite enough for your work?

Google positions Flash-Lite for speed and simple requests. We found no independent head-to-head test against Flash and Pro, so use this as a starting point and run your own prompts.

Usage limits: the other half of the change

Limits have been compute-based since May 17. They refresh every five hours until you reach a weekly limit. Pro, Deep Research, media generation and extended thinking use more of your limit. You can also pick a low, medium or high effort level for each model. Higher effort gives more thorough answers and uses more of your limit.

If you only need Flash, Plus is the cheapest way back, but it is losing Pro, so check the email Google sends before you subscribe for Pro access.

What to do before October 9

  1. Update the Gemini mobile app. Google recommends the latest version.
  2. Test your real prompts on Flash-Lite. Re-run three or four of your usual tasks and compare.
  3. Save important chats and outputs. Google has not said whether existing chats switch to Flash-Lite.
  4. Plus subscribers: watch your inbox. The email sets your date.
  5. Decide with the checker above. If your job needs Flash or Pro, price the upgrade first.

What Google has not said

  • Which version of Flash-Lite free users get. 9to5Google lists it as Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite.
  • What happens to existing chats that used Flash or Pro.
  • The exact time of day the change starts, so it can differ by time zone.
  • Whether Workspace accounts or the Gemini API are affected. The notice covers Gemini Apps with a personal account.

How this page is built

Model access, the October 9 date, effort levels, usage multiples and the May 17 and July 24 dates come from Google’s own help page. Prices, the Flash-Lite version and the pre-change free lineup come from press coverage of 9to5Google’s October 3 report, because Google’s page lists none of them. Where sources disagree, as on Deep Think for AI Pro, we follow Google’s page and say so.

Sources checked: Gemini Apps Help: model access and limits, Notebookcheck, WinBuzzer. Built and checked by R.K., Creator and Business Economics Analyst. We will update this page when Google confirms Plus dates or changes the Deep Think wording.
