Why Alberta and Manitoba Are Not Falling Back
Advertisements
Alberta: UTC−6 year-round
Alberta announced its move to Alberta Time in June 2026, in step with British Columbia’s permanent daylight time. Calgary and Edmonton stay on UTC−6, matching Regina and Saskatoon.
Manitoba: UTC−5 year-round
Manitoba announced its change on September 17, 2026. The province’s proclamation sets October 31, 2026 as the date the Official Time Amendment Act comes into force. Microsoft documented the change in its Manitoba time zone update.
Northwestern Ontario: UTC−5 west of 90°W
Ontario announced its plan on October 13, 2026. Regulation 333/26 was made October 19, filed October 20, and is scheduled to take effect November 1. It sets the region’s time at UTC−5 year-round. Details are in the Ontario government release.
How to Prevent One-Hour Outlook and Calendar Errors
Before November 1, 2026, install the latest operating-system and application updates, then confirm your Windows and Outlook time zones reflect the new rules. Per Microsoft’s Outlook guidance for Canadian provinces:
- Alberta: select (UTC-06:00) Mountain Time (Alberta) after installing the applicable update. If the update isn’t available yet, Microsoft’s temporary workaround is the Saskatchewan time zone. Switch to the Alberta zone once you can.
- Manitoba: select (UTC-05:00) Manitoba in Outlook. Eastern Time with automatic DST turned off is not a permanent fix.
- British Columbia: select (UTC-07:00) Pacific Time (British Columbia).
- Existing meetings: check appointments on or after November 1, especially recurring meetings created under the old rules. Changing your default time zone doesn’t necessarily fix every existing event. Editing a recurring series can also reset exceptions, such as single meetings you moved, so recheck those after updating.
- Northwestern Ontario: update your device and verify its time-zone data reflects UTC−5 from November 1.
