Claude Max vs Ultra: $100 vs $200 & Usage Limits (2026)

On October 30, 2026, Anthropic renamed Max 5x to Max ($100/mo) and Max 20x to Ultra ($200/mo). Verified Ultra accounts no longer have a five-hour limit, but a weekly cap still applies. Here is what changed, how to check your account, and what the monthly API credits really cover.

Quick answer: what is the difference between Claude Max and Ultra?

Max ($100/mo) gives 5x Pro usage every five hours and every week, and keeps the five-hour limit. Ultra ($200/mo) gives 10x Pro usage every week and has no five-hour limit once your account is verified.

Both include Claude Code and Fable (up to 50% of your weekly limit). Max includes $100 and Ultra $200 in monthly Claude Platform API credits, They don’t cover interactive Claude Code or extra usage in Claude and Cowork, but running claude -p or the Agent SDK yourself with an API key from your linked Console organization can use them.

1. Ultra is 10x Pro weekly, not 20x

Anthropic’s Ultra documentation states 10 times the Pro plan’s usage every week. The “20x” name is retired. Max stays at 5x Pro every five hours and every week.

2. Only verified accounts lose the 5-hour limit

Anthropic verifies Ultra accounts automatically. Check Settings → Usage: if there is no “Current session” bar, you are verified. Phone verification at checkout does not count.

3. API credits don’t cover interactive Claude Code

The $100/$200 credits cover the Claude Platform (API, Playground, Managed Agents, Agent SDK). They don’t pay for interactive Claude Code or for extra usage in Claude and Cowork.

What changed when Max 20x became Ultra?

  • Renamed: Max 5x is now Max ($100/mo). Max 20x is now Ultra ($200/mo). Existing subscribers move automatically with no price change (Ultra plan article).
  • Five-hour limit removed for verified Ultra accounts. Unverified accounts get a temporary limit that Anthropic removes automatically once verification completes. Press coverage described the rollout as staged.
  • Weekly cap unchanged in practice: Ultra is 10x Pro every week. The old “20x” label referred to the five-hour session allowance; weekly limits were added later.
  • Billing: Max and Ultra are monthly-only. The $100 and $200 prices are web prices; app-store prices can differ.

The wrap-up allowance is a small, capped extension that lets Claude Code finish the step it is on, and Anthropic says it is rolling out gradually.

Team plans

Team plans are seat-based and have their own limits (see Anthropic’s Team and Enterprise help). Two verified details: monthly API credits are $20 per Standard seat and $100 per Premium seat, pooled into one balance capped at $500 a month; and Fable is included on Premium seats but runs on usage credits on Standard seats.

5 rules every Max and Ultra subscriber should know

    1. How to check if your Ultra account is verified. Anthropic verifies accounts automatically using factors like account and payment history. Open Settings → Usage: no Current session bar means you are verified. Verifying your phone number at checkout is separate and does not remove the temporary limit (Ultra plan article).
    2. No 5-hour limit does not mean unlimited. Ultra is 10x Pro every week. You can now spend a big share of that in one long session instead of being paused every five hours, but once the weekly limit is gone you wait for your fixed weekly reset, or use usage credits. Your reset day and time stay the same each week (Max plan article).
    3. Monthly API credits are for building, not for chatting or coding interactively. After seven days on Max or Ultra, claim them in Settings → Billing on claude.ai by linking one Claude Console organization. You cannot change that link yourself later. Credits cover the Claude API, Playground, Managed Agents and the Agent SDK, do not roll over, and don’t change your plan limits. claude -p and the Agent SDK use them only when run with an API key from the linked organization; signed in with your plan, they draw from plan limits instead. Runs started by the Claude Code GitHub Action, an IDE extension or the desktop app count as Claude Code usage, so credits don’t cover them even with -p (API credits article).
    4. Usage credits are a different thing. When you run out of a five-hour, weekly or Fable limit, you can enable pay-as-you-go usage credits in Settings → Usage, billed at standard API rates. Monthly API credits can’t be applied to them (Manage usage credits).
    5. Fable shares your weekly pool. On Max and Ultra you can use up to 50% of your weekly limit on Fable models, but that is a cap inside your weekly allowance, not an extra 50%. Fable uses the pool faster than other models (Fable on your plan).
Bonus: limit resets. Anthropic occasionally gives eligible plans a free limit reset. Click “Reset for free” in Settings → Usage on the web or Claude Desktop. The button isn’t available on Claude Mobile or inside Claude Code in the terminal or IDE (What is a limit reset?).

Is Claude Ultra worth it? Which plan fits you

The math is simple: Pro is $20 for 1x, Max is $100 for 5x, and Ultra is $200 for 10x. That is $20 per Pro-week of capacity on every tier, so Ultra doesn’t make usage cheaper. It makes it bigger and removes the five-hour pause.

    If this describes you…Best fitWhy
Everyday chat, writing, light Claude CodePro ($20)Baseline weekly usage; Fable only via usage credits.
You hit Pro limits most weeksMax ($100)5x weekly usage, Fable included, $100 API credits.
Short, frequent Claude Code sessionsMax ($100)The weekly cap is what binds you, so dropping the 5-hour limit adds little.
Long, uninterrupted agentic or multi-session Claude Code daysUltra ($200)No five-hour wall once verified, and twice Max’s weekly allowance.
You build on the Claude API alongside your planUltra ($200)$200/mo Claude Platform credits (Max gives $100).
Not sure? Max is the safer starting point: you can upgrade to Ultra mid-cycle and Anthropic prorates the charge. If you’ve already claimed API credits, you get prorated credits right away, then $200 each cycle (Max plan billing notes).

Claude Max vs Ultra: frequently asked questions

What changed when Claude Max 20x became Claude Ultra?
On October 30, 2026, Anthropic renamed Max 20x to Ultra ($200 per month) and Max 5x to Max ($100 per month). Existing subscribers moved automatically with no price change. Verified Ultra accounts have no five-hour limit and work against a weekly limit of 10 times Pro usage. Max keeps its five-hour limit.
Is Claude Ultra 20x or 10x Pro usage?
Ultra includes 10 times the Pro plan’s usage every week. The former 20x label referred to the plan’s five-hour session allowance; weekly limits were added later. Anthropic’s Ultra documentation states the weekly allowance as 10x Pro, and Max as 5x Pro every five hours and every week.
How do I know if my Claude Ultra account is verified?
Anthropic verifies Ultra accounts automatically using factors such as account and payment history. Go to Settings > Usage: if you do not see a Current session bar, your account is verified and has no five-hour limit. Verifying your phone number at checkout is a separate step and does not remove the temporary limit.
What is the difference between Claude Max and Claude Ultra?
Max costs $100 per month and gives 5 times Pro usage every five hours and every week, plus $100 in monthly Claude Platform API credits. Ultra costs $200 per month and gives 10 times Pro usage every week, no five-hour limit for verified accounts, and $200 in monthly API credits. Both include Claude Code and Fable access up to 50% of the weekly limit, and both are monthly-only.
Can the monthly API credits on Max or Ultra be used in Claude Code?
No. The $100 (Max) and $200 (Ultra) monthly credits apply to the Claude Platform: the Claude API, the Console Playground, Claude Managed Agents and the Claude Agent SDK. They do not cover interactive Claude Code, extra usage in Claude, Claude Code or Cowork, or usage credits. Running claude -p or the Claude Agent SDK yourself with an API key from the linked Console organization can use them; when signed in with your plan, that usage comes from your plan limits. You claim them after seven days on the plan by linking one Claude Console organization, and unused credits expire each billing cycle.
Does Claude Fable count against my Max or Ultra limits?
Yes. On Max and Ultra you can use Fable models for up to 50% of your weekly usage limits at no extra cost. Fable draws from the same weekly pool and uses it faster than other models, so it does not add 50% more usage. After reaching the Fable limit you can continue with usage credits or switch to another model.
Is Claude Ultra worth $200 a month?
Ultra gives twice Max’s weekly usage for twice the price, so the cost per unit of weekly usage is the same ($20 per Pro-week of capacity). It is worth considering if you regularly exhaust your Max weekly limit, or if long Claude Code sessions keep hitting the five-hour limit. If neither happens, Max is usually enough.
