iOS 27 Apple Intelligence Storage: Why Some iPhones Show 15GB
Some iPhone owners say Apple Intelligence is occupying 9GB to 16GB after updating to iOS 27. But Apple’s published requirement is lower for most models: up to 8GB on many supported iPhones and up to 14GB on certain newer models. Here is how to check your real usage, why it can temporarily spike, and what the reported Siri-language workaround actually does.
Quick answer: Is Apple Intelligence really using 15GB?
Not on every iPhone. Apple says Apple Intelligence can require up to 8GB on most eligible iPhones and up to 14GB on iPhone Duo, iPhone 17 Pro models and later, and iPhone Air. Apple also warns that storage can temporarily exceed the normal requirement during and shortly after an update while new models download and older ones are removed. GSMArena separately reported user cases of 9GB to 16GB and tested a Siri-language change that reduced the displayed footprint to around 100MB on its test device. That workaround is not an Apple-approved fix and may make Apple Intelligence unavailable.

How much storage does Apple Intelligence officially need?
Apple’s current support documentation gives two upper limits for on-device Apple Intelligence storage. These are published requirements, not a promise that every iPhone will show exactly that number in Settings.
| Device group | Apple’s published storage requirement | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Most Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhones Including iPhone 15 Pro family and eligible iPhone 16 models | Up to 8GB | This is Apple’s stated upper requirement for other eligible iPhone models. |
| Newer high-memory devices iPhone Duo, iPhone 17 Pro models and later, and iPhone Air | Up to 14GB | Apple lists a higher storage requirement for these devices. |
| Apple Watch | Up to 1.5GB | Apple lists a separate requirement for eligible watchOS 27 devices paired with an enabled iPhone. |

Check the expected Apple Intelligence storage for your iPhone
Apple Intelligence is not available on every iPhone that can install iOS 27. The operating-system compatibility list is wider than the Apple Intelligence hardware list. Choose your model family below to see Apple’s stated storage category.
Select your iPhone model
The checker will show whether Apple Intelligence is supported and the applicable published storage requirement.
Important distinction: iOS 27.2 supports iPhone 11 and later, but Apple Intelligence requires iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 16 models or later. An iPhone 11, 12, 13 or 14 can install iOS 27.2 without downloading the Apple Intelligence model bundle described in this guide.

Why are some iPhones showing 9GB, 15GB or even 16GB?
On November 1, 2026, GSMArena reported users seeing Apple Intelligence take around 15GB after installing iOS 27. The report described individual cases ranging from roughly 9GB to 16GB, including reports from EU users who could not use the new Siri AI experience.
There are two important qualifications:
- Post-update model downloads can temporarily inflate storage. Apple explicitly says storage can exceed its published requirements during and shortly after an update while new models are downloaded and older ones are removed.
- The EU restriction is specifically about Siri AI. Apple says the next-generation Apple Intelligence features across apps are available to supported EU users, while Siri AI itself is not available in the EU on iOS, iPadOS or watchOS at launch. Do not describe all Apple Intelligence features as blocked throughout the EU.
Before changing language or disabling features, open Settings → General → iPhone Storage and inspect the storage breakdown. Note the available space and the Apple Intelligence or system storage entry shown on your device. Check again after post-update downloads and background setup have settled.
Do not factory-reset your iPhone just because storage rose after the update. Apple’s documentation says the figure can temporarily exceed its normal requirement while models are being updated. Start by checking the storage breakdown and allowing the update-related downloads to finish.
Can changing Siri’s language reclaim the reported 15GB?

GSMArena tested one workaround: changing Siri’s language to English (South Africa) and restarting the iPhone reduced the Apple Intelligence storage footprint on its test device to around 100MB. Its report also mentions Canadian, Irish and New Zealand English as variants users could try, but it specifically says its own test used South African English.
This is an independent test, not a storage-cleanup procedure published or endorsed by Apple. Results can vary by iPhone, software build and language configuration.
- Open Settings → Siri → Language (the wording may appear under Apple Intelligence and Siri on some configurations).
- Select English (South Africa). This is the English variant GSMArena says it tested itself.
- Restart your iPhone.
- After the phone has restarted, open Settings → General → iPhone Storage and check whether the Apple Intelligence storage figure has changed.
Read this before trying it: Apple says the device language and Siri language must be set to the same supported language for Apple Intelligence. Apple also warns that changing Siri’s language can make Apple Intelligence unavailable until the new language fully downloads and matches the device language. If you rely on Apple Intelligence, keep your current settings and wait for post-update storage activity to settle instead of using this workaround.

iOS 27.2 privacy feature: stop Siri accessing selected apps
iOS 27.2 adds a useful setting called Excluded Apps. It lets you choose which apps are unavailable to Siri, Search and suggestions. This is a privacy control, not a way to remove Apple Intelligence model files or reclaim storage.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap Siri.
- Tap Excluded Apps.
- Tap Add Apps and select the apps you want to exclude.
- Tap the blue checkmark to save your selection.
Apple says excluded apps are not available to Siri, Search or suggestions. You can change the selection later from the same screen. See Apple’s Siri settings guide.

iOS 27.2: compatibility and security update
Apple released iOS 27.2 on October 26, 2026. The update is listed for iPhone 11 and later. That is the operating-system compatibility list; Apple Intelligence still requires newer hardware.
| Question | Verified detail |
|---|---|
| When was iOS 27.2 released? | October 26, 2026. |
| Which iPhones can install it? | iPhone 11 and later, according to Apple’s security release listing. |
| Which iPhones support Apple Intelligence? | iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later, including eligible newer models. |
| Does it include security fixes? | Yes. Apple’s iOS 27.2 security bulletin lists multiple fixes, including CVE-2026-112688, a memory-corruption issue affecting file parsing that could cause an app termination or arbitrary code execution. |

What should you do? Choose your storage priority
The best next step depends on whether you want to keep Apple Intelligence fully working or are willing to test a workaround that may make some AI features unavailable.
