Where Did the YouTube Subscriptions Button Go?
If you opened the YouTube app this week and your thumb tapped the wrong icon, you aren’t imagining it: YouTube is rolling out a navigation redesign that removes Subscriptions from the bottom bar, shrinks the bottom menu to four tabs, and adds a ‘+’ custom feed builder at the top of Home.

On October 22–23, 2026, YouTube began moving Subscriptions out of the mobile bottom bar on Android and iPhone (9to5Google, Droid Life). The bottom bar now has four icons: Home, Shorts, Create and You. The feed is renamed “Subs” and is the second tab in a new top bar on Home, followed by Live, Music, and Movies & TV (the last only for viewers with active paid content). A “+” button at the top of Home lets you describe a custom feed, which is saved as a tab after Home and Subs. Custom feeds are launching first in the US for signed-in, English-language users.

Everything That Changed in YouTube’s October 2026 Navigation Update
Since 2017, YouTube’s mobile app kept your Subscriptions feed in the bottom navigation bar, within easy thumb reach. With the late-October 2026 “seamless navigation experience” update (reported by Droid Life), YouTube reorganized the top and bottom of the app to make room for user-created custom feeds.
1. Where Your Subscriptions (‘Subs’) Tab Moved
Look at the bottom of your YouTube app: instead of five icons there are now four, Home, Shorts, Create, and You. Your Subscriptions feed was not deleted. It was renamed “Subs” and moved to a new top bar on the Home tab, where it is the second tab, right after Home, followed by Live, Music, and Movies & TV.
2. How the New ‘+’ Custom Feed Builder Works
The biggest functional addition is the “+” button at the top of Home. Tap it and describe the topic, channels, or vibe you want in your own words, such as “witty podcasts for my 30-minute commute” or “building custom keyboards”. YouTube builds a feed from your prompt and saves it as a tab after Home and Subs, and you can edit the prompt later from the box at the top of that feed.
Don’t confuse the two plus signs: the Create button in the bottom bar is for uploading and creating videos, while the “+” at the top of Home builds custom feeds.
3. Who Gets Custom Feeds, and When
Custom feeds are launching first for signed-in users in the US who use YouTube in English, on mobile and desktop, according to Sammy Fans, which also reports a limit of three saved custom feeds for free users and eight for YouTube Premium members. That limit comes from a single outlet, so check YouTube’s help page before relying on it. YouTube has said more countries will follow but has not given a date for the new bottom bar to reach everyone. If your app still shows five bottom icons, the change simply has not reached your account yet.
4. How to Open Subscriptions Faster Without Reaching for the Top Bar
On large phones, reaching the top bar one-handed is awkward. These shortcuts can bypass it:
- On Android: Long-press the YouTube icon and look for a Subscriptions shortcut. YouTube has offered one for years, and you can drag it to your home screen. Confirm it still appears on your version.
- On iPhone: Add YouTube’s Quick Actions widget (it includes a Subscriptions button) or build a shortcut in the Shortcuts app with YouTube’s “Open my Subscriptions” action. Test it first, since behavior after the redesign was not re-confirmed.
5. Separate Change: Red YouTube Music Icon on Google TV
On October 30, 2026, 9to5Google reported that the YouTube app on Google TV now shows the YouTube Music sidebar icon as a bright red logo. The Music tab itself is unchanged, and the update may be a test or a partial rollout. It is not the same change as the mobile Subscriptions move.
Sources & Verification Methodology
This guide was cross-checked against 9to5Google (Oct 22, 2026), Droid Life (Oct 23, 2026), YouTube’s help-forum announcement, Sammy Fans (Oct 23, 2026) and 9to5Google’s Google TV report (Oct 30, 2026). We have not tested every device, and YouTube rolls changes out in stages, so what you see may differ.

Did YouTube remove the Subscriptions tab in October 2026?
YouTube removed the Subscriptions icon from the bottom bar of its Android and iPhone apps, leaving four icons (Home, Shorts, Create, You). The feed was not deleted. It is now called “Subs” and is the second tab in a new top bar on Home, right after Home.
What is the new ‘+’ button at the top of the YouTube app?
The “+” button at the top of Home lets you create a custom feed by describing the topic, channels, or vibe you want. Each custom feed is saved as a tab after Home and Subs, and you can edit its prompt later.
Can I move the YouTube Subscriptions button back to the bottom bar?
YouTube has not announced an in-app setting to restore the old bottom bar. On Android you can long-press the YouTube icon and look for a Subscriptions shortcut to place on your home screen. On iPhone, use YouTube’s Quick Actions widget or a Shortcuts action that opens your Subscriptions.
Why don’t I see the Subs tab or the ‘+’ button yet?
The rollout is staged. Custom feeds launched first for signed-in, English-language users in the US on mobile and desktop, and YouTube says more countries will follow. YouTube has not said when the new bottom bar will reach everyone, so a five-icon bottom bar usually means the change has not reached your account yet.
