Updated November 1, 2026. Latest: on October 30, MacRumors reported that Apple sent stores and authorized service providers a memo telling technicians to inspect affected iPhone Duo units and repair or replace them under standard procedures. Apple says there is no recall and has not launched a public repair program. Apple has not said what causes the cracking.

Why is the iPhone Duo inner screen cracking, and will Apple replace it?

Within days of the iPhone Duo’s October 23, 2026 launch, owners reported cracks and bright pixel lines along the hinge. On October 26 Apple told MacRumors it is aware of an issue affecting the inner display on a small number of units and that owners should contact AppleCare for a replacement (MacRumors). iFixit’s teardown found the breaks cluster slightly below where the display cable crosses the hinge (iFixit). Apple has not named a cause. Out-of-warranty inner display damage costs $999 in the US, or $99 with AppleCare+.

What to do: A crack along the hinge with no impact matches the issue Apple says affects a small number of units. Apple’s public advice is to contact AppleCare for a replacement, and a reported memo tells technicians to inspect and repair or replace affected phones. Apple has not published a formal program, so the outcome is Apple’s decision. Do not peel the cover layer or attempt a repair yourself.
United States: Contact AppleCare at getsupport.apple.com or 1-800-APL-CARE. Apple’s standard warranty is one year.
Where the breaks cluster: iFixit built a 3D hinge model from teardown footage, patents and CT scans and compared it with reported damage locations. The breaks cluster near the transition from the gap for the crossing flex cable to the central hinge support, slightly below where the display cable passes through, at a point where several edges meet. This is iFixit’s analysis, not an Apple finding.
Step 1: Document the damage. Take clear photos and a short video of the screen, hinge and frame in bright light, including the date and any popping or sticking when you fold it. Keep the original files. MacRumors says some images circulating online are AI-generated, so original files with metadata are the best evidence that yours is real.

Your Rights by Country: US, UK, Canada, Australia, EU

Apple’s warranty is not your only protection. Consumer law in many countries applies on top of it and is enforced against the seller.

🇺🇸 United States

Contact AppleCare at getsupport.apple.com or 1-800-APL-CARE. Apple’s standard limited warranty covers defects for one year. Out of warranty, the inner display is $999, or $99 with AppleCare+.

🇬🇧 United Kingdom

The Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you a short-term right to reject a faulty phone within 30 days for a full refund from the seller. From 30 days to six months the seller gets one chance to repair or replace it, and a fault is presumed to have been there at delivery (NI Business Info). Claim against whoever sold it to you.

🇨🇦 Canada

AppleCare is reachable at 1-800-APL-CARE or getsupport.apple.com. Consumer protection is set by each province, so check your provincial consumer office if Apple declines a claim.

🇦🇺 Australia

The Australian Consumer Law guarantees apply regardless of Apple’s own warranty. For a major failure you can choose a refund or replacement. Whether a cracked inner screen counts as major depends on the case. An Australian owner told MacRumors the screen cracked after fewer than 20 openings.

🇩🇪 Germany and the EU

EU consumer law generally provides at least a two-year legal guarantee against defects on top of Apple’s own warranty, and the seller is your first contact. Details differ by country, so check your national consumer centre.

🌐 Elsewhere

Start at getsupport.apple.com and choose your country. Ask Apple whether local consumer law gives you extra rights, and keep your receipt and photos.

This is general information, not legal advice. Whether a crack counts as a defect is decided by Apple or the seller, and by a court or consumer body if you dispute it.

Inside the iPhone Duo Cracking Controversy: 5 Takeaways

The iPhone Duo went on sale October 23, 2026. Within hours some owners posted photos of bright lines and cracks along the fold, one within six hours of purchase. MacRumors reported that most cracks sit on the lower half of the inner display along the hinge, and that owners describe a stuck feeling and sometimes a pop just before the damage appears.

1. Apple has acknowledged it, but not explained it

Apple’s statement is short: an issue affecting the inner display on a small number of units, and a pointer to AppleCare. Apple did not say what causes it or whether a fix is planned. Per MacRumors, Apple says most units are not susceptible and that affected units show the defect soon after use. Stores have been replacing affected phones, though limited stock has meant waits.

2. iFixit points to the hinge, and says so cautiously

iFixit’s CT scans and hinge model place the breaks just below the flex-cable gap, where several edges meet and change how the thin display is supported. One scenario they simulated has the center support bar failing to drop far enough, so the curved fold lands on it. iFixit presents this as one possible answer, not a proven cause.

3. The “lowered QA standards” claim is weak

On October 29 GSMArena relayed a Jiemian News report that Apple lowered its inspection standards to get more Duos out before the holidays. It rests on one unnamed Foxconn employee, and GSMArena also notes the same source said a batch of components has already been replaced. Treat it as unconfirmed, and do not assume it explains your phone.

4. The “creaseless” look is a disguise, and it is replaceable

Under iFixit’s microscope the matte finish is a layer of tiny rounded bumps, a bit like bubble wrap, that scatters reflections so the dip is harder to see. Without it the crease is arguably as visible as the Galaxy Z Fold8’s. The layer can be replaced without replacing the OLED, but Apple’s procedure needs specialized fixtures and precise alignment.

5. What to do if yours cracks

  1. Stop folding it and document everything. Photos and a short video, with original files.
  2. Do not peel the cover layer. Apple has not said how that affects a defect claim.
  3. Contact AppleCare and say it matches the hinge-crack issue Apple acknowledged on October 26.
  4. Back up first. Ask about stock and wait times, because replacements have been limited.
  5. If Apple declines, use your local consumer rights (see the country guide above).

Apple Pencil on the iPhone Duo

Apple Pencil support arrived with iOS 27.2 on October 26, 2026, but only Apple Pencil (USB-C) works. Apple Pencil Pro and other models are not supported, according to 9to5Mac. Update in Settings, General, Software Update.

Sources & Verification Methodology

We checked this guide against the primary reporting and refreshed it on November 1, 2026. We separate what Apple has said, what iFixit measured and what is only reported. Where a claim has a single source we say so. Consumer-law summaries are general guidance.

How much does it cost to replace a cracked iPhone Duo inner screen?

In the US, Apple’s listed price for inner display damage is $999 without AppleCare+ and $99 with it, based on the estimates compiled by iFixit. If the screen cracked along the hinge without any impact, Apple’s public advice is to contact AppleCare for a replacement, so you may not pay anything, but that decision is Apple’s. Prices in other countries are on Apple’s local repair pages.

Will Apple replace a cracked iPhone Duo for free?

Apple told MacRumors on October 26, 2026 that it is aware of an issue affecting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units and that affected users should contact AppleCare for a replacement. MacRumors later reported that an internal memo tells technicians to inspect affected phones and repair or replace them under standard procedures. Apple has not published a formal program, so coverage is decided case by case.

Does AppleCare+ cover a cracked iPhone Duo screen?

Apple’s US estimate for inner display damage with AppleCare+ is $99, according to the listings compiled by iFixit. A crack that appears along the hinge with no impact is the issue Apple has told owners to bring to AppleCare, so whether you pay the $99 depends on how Apple classifies your case.

Is there an iPhone Duo recall?

No. MacRumors reported on October 30, 2026 that Apple said there is no iPhone Duo recall and that it has not launched a public repair program for the display cracking issue.

What is causing the iPhone Duo screen to crack?

Apple has not said. iFixit’s CT scans and hinge model show the breaks cluster slightly below where the display cable crosses the hinge, where several edges meet. One possibility iFixit simulated is that the center support bar does not drop far enough as the phone closes, creating a stress point. A Chinese report cited by GSMArena claims Apple lowered inspection standards, but it relies on one unnamed source and is unconfirmed.

Can I peel off the matte layer on the iPhone Duo screen?

iFixit found the display still works without the matte nano-texture layer, and Apple offers a cover-layer replacement for $49 ($19 with AppleCare+). Apple’s procedure uses specialized fixtures and precise alignment, the surface underneath scratches more easily, and the crease is more visible without it. Apple has not said how peeling affects a defect claim, so do not remove it yourself.

iPhone Duo cracked screen in the UK: what are my rights?

Besides Apple’s warranty, the Consumer Rights Act 2015 gives you a short-term right to reject a faulty phone within 30 days for a full refund from the seller. From 30 days to six months the seller gets one chance to repair or replace it, and a fault is presumed to have been there at delivery. Contact the seller you bought it from as well as Apple.

iPhone Duo cracked screen in Australia: what are my rights?

The Australian Consumer Law guarantees apply regardless of Apple’s own warranty. For a major failure you can choose a refund or a replacement, while for a minor one the business can choose between repair, replacement or refund. Whether a cracked inner screen counts as a major failure depends on the case, and the ACCC publishes guidance.

What about Canada, Germany and the rest of the EU?

In Canada, consumer protection is set by each province, so check your provincial consumer office if Apple declines a claim. AppleCare can be reached at 1-800-APL-CARE in the US and Canada. In EU countries such as Germany, consumer law generally provides at least a two-year legal guarantee against defects on top of Apple’s warranty, with details that vary by country.

Does the iPhone Duo support Apple Pencil?

Yes, since iOS 27.2, released October 26, 2026, but only Apple Pencil (USB-C). Apple Pencil Pro and other Pencil models are not supported, according to 9to5Mac. Update in Settings, General, Software Update.

How much does the iPhone Duo cost in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and Germany?

The 256GB model starts at $1,999 in the US, £1,999 in the UK, C$2,999 in Canada, A$3,499 in Australia and €2,299 in Germany (€2,339 in France).

Is the iPhone Duo hinge protected from dust and sand?

iFixit put the phone in fluorescent powder and found the hinge still crunched, even though less powder got in than in the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Pixel 11 Pro Fold it tested earlier. iFixit notes this was not an IP test and that IP ratings do not appear to cover a foldable’s hinge mechanism.

Are the cracked iPhone Duo screen photos real?

Real owners have posted broken screens on Reddit and the MacRumors forums, and iFixit used some of those photos in its analysis. MacRumors says it understands that some circulating images are AI-generated, so keep your own original photos and video if you file a claim.
