Microsoft Fabric vs Snowflake
Cost Calculator

Model a comparable scenario on both platforms: capacity or warehouse compute, storage and BI licensing, using your own assumptions. Built on published US baseline rates, with every modeling choice shown.

Is Microsoft Fabric cheaper than Snowflake?

It depends on the workload and your assumptions. Fabric bundles Power BI, storage and compute into one F-SKU price, which tends to suit steady, always-on BI use. Snowflake bills warehouse compute per second with auto-suspend, and has no bundled BI platform, which tends to suit bursty workloads.

There is no vendor-published conversion between an F-SKU and a Snowflake warehouse. This calculator uses a labeled scenario pairing, not a certified equivalence. Enter your own numbers below.

How to use this calculator

Fabric bills a shared capacity while it runs; Snowflake bills a warehouse per second while it runs, with a 60-second minimum on each resume. Pick a scenario size, or set your own compute hours, storage, edition and BI users independently for each platform.

Model note: the Fabric/Snowflake scenario pairs below are a UIG modeling convenience for comparing similar-scale workloads, not a vendor-certified equivalence. Size each platform from your own workload benchmarks or each vendor’s own calculator.

Results are a modeled cost under the assumptions you enter, using US baseline list pricing. They are not a quote and not a certified platform equivalence.
1. Scenario size
A UIG scenario pairing by rough scale, not a vendor equivalence. Adjust hours, storage and edition below to match your own workload.
2. Compute
Hours the capacity is running. PAYG bills while active; pausing stops compute billing. OneLake storage keeps billing regardless.
Hours the warehouse is running. Auto-suspend stops billing after idle; each resume has a 60-second minimum, not modeled per-query here.
3. Storage and edition
US baseline for OneLake hot and Snowflake on-demand storage. Rates vary by region and tier on both platforms.
Credit price varies by cloud, region and contract. This is a commonly cited US baseline, not a universal rate.
4. BI licensing
Below F64-scale, viewers need Pro ($14/mo). At F64-scale and above, eligible free-license viewers can view content.
Creators need Pro ($14/mo) regardless of capacity size.

Steady capacity usage

Fabric’s fixed price is easier to budget once a capacity runs most hours, and F64-scale can remove per-viewer Power BI cost.

Bursty warehouse usage

Snowflake’s per-second billing with auto-suspend means idle time between bursts costs close to nothing, beyond the 60-second minimum per resume.

Viewer-heavy BI

Fabric bundles Power BI. Snowflake needs a separate BI tool license (or Streamlit) for dashboards on every viewer.

Workload isolation

Snowflake can isolate work across independent warehouses. Fabric workloads on one capacity share its pool unless split across capacities.

Why the two billing models are hard to compare directly

Microsoft Fabric sells a shared pool of capacity units under an F-SKU, covering Power BI, Spark, SQL and pipelines from one price while the capacity is active; pausing stops compute billing but OneLake storage keeps billing. Snowflake sells warehouse compute per second, billed with a 60-second minimum on each resume, with storage priced separately and no bundled BI layer. Neither unit converts cleanly into the other, so any tier pairing is a modeling choice, not a fact.

Formulas

Fabric = CUs x $0.18/CU-hr x active hours/day x 30.4167 (or a fixed reservation) + storage + Power BI licences (viewers free if F64-scale+) Snowflake = warehouse credits/hr x credit rate x hours/day x 30.4167 x (1 – your discount) + storage + BI licences (if the box is checked) Storage = TB x 1024 x $/GB-month (same rate, both platforms, editable) 30.4167 = 730 hours / 24, the average-month convention Microsoft uses for its own F-SKU price examples.

Worked example at the default inputs (Enterprise BI scenario, 24h/day Fabric, 8h/day Snowflake, Enterprise edition, 20 TB, 500 viewers, 20 creators): Fabric = 64 x $0.18 x 24 x 30.4167 + $471 storage + (20 x $14 creators, viewers free at F64-scale) ≈ $8,410 + $471 + $280 ≈ $9,161/month. Snowflake = 8 x $3.00 x 8 x 30.4167 + $471 storage + 520 x $14 licences ≈ $5,840 + $471 + $7,280 ≈ $13,591/month. Change the Fabric hours or the BI toggle and the ranking can flip; that sensitivity is the point of the calculator.

Snowflake’s cloud services adjustment

Snowflake provides cloud services compute (authentication, query optimization, metadata) free as long as daily cloud services usage stays under 10% of that day’s warehouse compute. For most accounts this is not a separate cost and is not modeled here; very query-heavy, low-compute-time accounts are the exception.

BI licensing: the line many comparisons skip

Snowflake’s warehouse pricing includes no enterprise BI platform. Snowsight can chart individual query results, but Snowflake retired its legacy dashboard feature on June 22, 2026, and now directs customers to Streamlit or a third-party BI tool such as Power BI or Tableau for anything more than ad hoc charts. Fabric includes Power BI as a workload inside the F-SKU price, and F64 and above allows eligible viewers with a free license, though creators and publishers still need Pro or PPU on any SKU.

Running both platforms together

Some organizations keep Snowflake as the engineering source of truth and reference it from Fabric using OneLake shortcuts or mirroring, then run Power BI in Direct Lake mode against it. That hybrid pattern is outside the scope of this single-platform calculator.

What this model leaves out

Not modeled: Snowflake’s cloud services adjustment beyond the 10% rule, Snowpipe and other serverless features, Time Travel and Fail-safe storage duplication, cross-region data transfer, Gen2 warehouse credit rates, Fabric capacity smoothing, bursting and throttling, and the opt-in capacity overage feature, which Microsoft bills at 3x the pay-as-you-go rate for CU-hours beyond a capacity’s allowance. Neither platform’s negotiated enterprise pricing is reflected. Use this tool to narrow the decision, then validate with Microsoft’s and Snowflake’s own calculators.

Fabric vs Snowflake cost calculator: FAQs

Is Microsoft Fabric cheaper than Snowflake?
It depends on workload shape and how you enter the assumptions. Fabric bundles Power BI, storage and compute into one F-SKU price, which tends to suit steady, always-on BI use, especially where a team would otherwise pay separately for a BI tool. Snowflake bills warehouse compute per second with auto-suspend, which tends to suit bursty, intermittent workloads with long idle periods. Enter your own numbers to compare a scenario, not a guaranteed outcome.
How is Snowflake compute cost calculated?
Snowflake bills virtual warehouses in credits per hour, per second, with a 60-second minimum each time a warehouse resumes. Warehouse size follows a doubling scale from X-Small (1 credit/hour) up to 6X-Large (512 credits/hour). Credit price depends on edition, cloud and region; a commonly cited US baseline is about $2 on Standard, $3 on Enterprise and $4 on Business Critical, before any negotiated discount.
Does Snowflake include a BI tool like Power BI is included in Fabric?
No enterprise BI platform is bundled into Snowflake’s warehouse pricing. Snowsight offers charts on query results, but Snowflake removed its legacy dashboard feature on June 22, 2026 and now points customers to Streamlit or a third-party BI tool such as Power BI or Tableau for dashboards. Microsoft Fabric includes Power BI as a workload inside the same F-SKU capacity.
What does this calculator not model?
It does not model Snowflake’s cloud services adjustment, Snowpipe or other serverless features, Time Travel and Fail-safe storage, cross-region data transfer, or Fabric’s capacity smoothing, bursting and overage billing. Neither platform’s negotiated enterprise pricing is reflected. Treat the output as a directional estimate under your stated assumptions, not a quote.
Are the Fabric and Snowflake tiers in this calculator officially equivalent?
No. There is no vendor-published conversion between Fabric capacity units and Snowflake warehouse sizes. The paired scenarios in this calculator are a UIG modeling convenience for comparing similar-scale workloads, not a certified performance equivalence. Size each platform from your own workload benchmarks.
What discount does a Snowflake capacity contract provide?
Snowflake capacity pricing is contract-specific and is not a published universal discount. Enter your own negotiated or planning discount percentage in the calculator rather than relying on a fixed assumption.
